about

A man broken in body and spirit, Cazaril returns to the noble household he once served as page and is named secretary-tutor to the beautiful, strong-willed sister of the impetuous boy who is next in line to rule. It is an assignment Cazaril dreads, for it must ultimately lead him to the place he most fears: the royal court of Cardegoss, where the powerful enemies who once placed him in chains now occupy lofty positions.

But it is more than the traitorous intrigues of villains that threaten Cazaril and the Royesse Iselle here, for a sinister curse hangs like a sword over the entire blighted House of Chalion. And only by employing the darkest, most forbidden of magics can Cazaril hope to protect his royal charge -- an act that will mark him as a tool of the miraculous . . . and trap him in a lethal maze of demonic paradox.

Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I've reread it several times This has become one of my favorites. The main character and the world building compete for my accolades.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantasy A nice fantasy tale. Despite being a few notches less frantic than most fantasy novels, its a great story with some excellent characters.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This is the first book in the Chalion series and it is both a delightful read and an excellent introduction to the series. I enjoy the rich use of language and creative plot lines. The unique religion introduces gods who interact with the characters in a meaningful way and characters with both courage and spirit. The development of the characters is sympathetic, realistic and textured. If you are looking for a fantasy book which has both intense action and mature character development, this book is for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favourite books ever, from one of my favourite authors ever. The story uses understated humour to discuss what would happen if gods were real, and could interfere in our lives if we allow them to do so.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another re-read I think this book is one my very favorites. Boujold's world is crisp and well defined. As a fantasy is breaks from the usual mold, no wizards or elves, barbarians or dwarves, just a well written story that is fun yet thought provoking.
