Now a major motion picture starring Matthew McConaughey and Idris Elba

“An impressive work of mythic magnitude that may turn out to be Stephen King’s greatest literary achievement” (The Atlanta Journal-Constitution), The Gunslinger is the first volume in the epic Dark Tower Series.

A #1 national bestseller, The Gunslinger introduces readers to one of Stephen King’s most powerful creations, Roland of Gilead: The Last Gunslinger. He is a haunting figure, a loner on a spellbinding journey into good and evil. In his desolate world, which mirrors our own in frightening ways, Roland tracks The Man in Black, encounters an enticing woman named Alice, and begins a friendship with the boy from New York named Jake.

Inspired in part by the Robert Browning narrative poem, “Childe Roland to the Dark Tower Came,” The Gunslinger is “a compelling whirlpool of a story that draws one irretrievable to its center” (Milwaukee Sentinel). It is “brilliant and fresh…and will leave you panting for more” (Booklist).
Stephen King was born in Portland, Maine, on September 21, 1947. After graduating with a Bachelor's degree in English from the University of Maine at Orono in 1970, he became a teacher. His spare time was spent writing short stories and novels. King's first novel would never have been published if not for his wife. She removed the firs...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from YES KING I have been reading King forever and have read the majority of his novels (although I won't say I'm his biggest fan due to the repercussion of certain tales from his "Misery" novel), and the dark tower series is by far one of my top sagas written by any author. Truly rich and compelling with every part, start today!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I'm hooked!! I went in to this read thinking it would be a boring character developing book as many first books in a long series are. But I was wrong. The character development was great and King did it in a way that also was entertaining and smart. The story was complex to follow at times by the way it jumped back and forth from present to past so I found it important to read it a bit every day. Otherwise it was easy to get lost. But it has left me wanting more and lucky for me there's lots more to come. On to the Drawing Of The Three.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not sure if I like this one Despite being a King fan, I have never read the Dark Tower series. Wanted to read the first book before seeing the movie, but I've now read the first two sections of The Gunslinger and i don't think I will finish it. Too grim, dark, and violent. I can't build a mental picture of the environment. Is this a past or future dystopia? Probably these questions will be answered in time, but I think I will see the movie and then decide if whether to finish the book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Fantasy Series This book is the first in an amazing fantasy series. In the introduction of a different version of this book, Stephen King mentions trying to get the same immensity as Middle-Earth while trying to mix in elements of the Old West (think Man with No Name movie trilogy). For what its worth, I think Stephen King succeeded. The characters are memorable, and the story plays out really well. It's definitely worth a read.
