about

In the second installment of New York Times bestselling author Morgan Rhodes's highly acclaimed Falling Kingdoms spin-off series, danger looms and the mystery deepens as two warring evils vie for possession of one elusive, powerful book.

Modern-day Toronto: Sisters Crystal and Becca Hatcher are reunited after reclaiming the Bronze Codex and narrowly escaping death. They have no one to trust but each other, and the only thing keeping them safe is the book that sent Becca's spirit to Ancient Mytica--the same book that their enemies would kill them for.

Ancient Mytica: Maddox grapples to keep his newly discovered powers under control, while the ruthless goddess Valoria hunts him down.

Modern-day Toronto: Farrell embraces his dark side as he unwittingly falls further under the spell of Markus, the mastermind leader of the nefarious Hawkspear Society, who will stop at nothing to find Crys and Becca--and the remarkable book in their possession.

Reviews

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not worthy I liked the first book but this one was awful. The plots were....well, there were just too many of them and they all had different twists, but not in a good way. The first book was good, but this one was boring. They introduced a bunch of new characters that I just didn’t care about. There was no flow and it seemed to have no direction. No wonder this series did not do well. The third book is delayed in coming out and I can see why.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fantastic Sequel The Good The Darkest Magic by Morgan Rhodes is the second novel in the Spirits and Thieves Trilogy. It is part of the companion series to Falling Kingdoms (my favorite YA fantasy series EVER!). It picks up right after the events of the first book. Crys and Becca are being secluded into hiding with the Bronze Codex, Farrell is diving deeper into the Markus King cult while trying not to go crazy with his dead brother crowding his thoughts, and Maddox back in Mytica is on a journey to overthrow Valoria from the throne. I found this time that the characters had more time to be fleshed out and better developed. I can see a lot of growth with Becca and Crys. I love their fighting spirit and not taking no for an answer. But my favorite character overall is Maddox. You can see major growth with his character as he learns more and more about what his powers are actually capable of doing. I like that Morgan sticks with her usual fast paced writing style. Everything flowed nicely and each character has their own individual voice and speech patterns. There was a never a dull moment and the descriptions didn't take away from the story as a whole. The plot is a bit finicky for me in this one. To be honest I might be on the opposite side of the majority when I say I look forward to Maddox's POV the most. I am absolutely loving the history of Mytica. All the lies and betrayals, why Valoria and Cleiona are the way they are is just so fascinating to me. Although the modern day Toronto is a nice addition to the Spirits and Thieves series, I definitely enjoy the Mytican parts more. The world building keeps getting more and more expansive. It's nice to see that Morgan doesn't stay inside the box with Mytica. We are finally getting more history and story behind the world I love so much. And that ending though.... I don't know how I am going to wait another year to find out what it all means! The Bad Here comes the parts I like talking about the least. I didn't find much wrong with The Darkest Magic, but it definitely doesn't compare to my beloved Falling Kingdoms series! First off I found some of the dialogue between characters to be a bit cheesy and cringe-worthy. Especially when Crys and Farrell are interacting with each other, or whenever Becca opens her mouth. (Ahhh, that sounds mean). I definitely click more with the way the Mytican characters interact with each other more then the modern day characters. Finally, the romance is just not working for me. I definitely don't like Crys and Farrell as a couple. They don't seem to fit well with each other, and I don't see how they are going to get past what Farrell did at the end of the first book. Becca and Maddox are way too insta-lovey for me. Their love seems to be a tad bit too kiddish to me. On the plus side of things, even though their really wasn't any romance between them, I quite enjoy and ship Barbas and Liana together!
