Book one in the hit series that's soon to be a major motion picture starring Amandla Stenberg and Mandy Moore--now with a stunning new paperback look and an exclusive bonus short story featuring Liam and his brother, Cole.

When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something alarming enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government "rehabilitation camp." She might have survived the mysterious disease that killed most of America's children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they cannot control.

Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones.

But when the truth about Ruby's abilities--the truth she's hidden from everyone, even the camp authorities--comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. On the run, she joins a group of kids who escaped their own camp: Zu, a young girl haunted by her past; Chubs, a standoffish brainiac; and Liam, their fearless leader, who is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can't risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents.

While they journey to find the one safe haven left for kids like them--East River--they must evade their determined pursuers, including an organization that will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. But as they get closer to grasping the things they've dreamed of, Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at a life worth living.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Typical Distopian Novel I picked up this book as one of the 2x$15 paperback deals in Indigo. I had a hard time getting through this book as there were many slow chapters when not much happened. I ended up seeing the movie which was not much better.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from 3.5 stars I decided to read The Darkest Minds because I watched the movie adaptation earlier in the month and the movie was... not good. I was curious about the book because it's such a beloved, bestselling series that I was curious if the movie was bad due to poor directing/writing, or if the source material itself was the cause. And The Darkest Minds was just okay. If there was one thing the movie did better, it was the pacing. The Darkest Minds is 488 pages and it felt like it was 488 pages. The pacing in this book was slow, and slow doesn't always mean boring, but this book definitely could have been improved if it were shorter. There were far too many descriptions of the gang just driving aimlessly and dealing with the same arguments over and over again. I liked the ensemble cast. They were all unique individuals and I liked them all even if Chubs did irritate me every once in a while. He was just a little too neurotic for my tastes, but his distrust of Ruby did create the necessary tension to keep readers interested. It made their inevitable friendship all that more satisfying too. Ruby was an interesting protagonist to follow since she was one of the first rounds of kids who were sent to the camps and she had the most unique effect on the people around her. Her backstory with her parents was unlike any other backstory that I've ever read. I think my favourites were Liam due to his kindness and charm and Zu because she just too cute for words. Literally. Ruby and Liam's relationship developed slowly and realistically, which made that ending that more gut wrenching. A huge reason why I want to continue with the series even though this book was just okay is because I want to see Ruby and Liam's interactions in the second book.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Almost I almost really liked this audio book, I got to hand it to the author for the unique concept, the unexpected twists and the character development which was pretty good. I was very skiptical at first with a fear of not being able to suspend my disbelief, but the first half started out strong. Unfortunately the book moved really slowly after that and the main character Ruby was very repetitive in her thoughts. Eventually it wore me down and I stopped caring about what would happen when Ruby kept repeating her thoughts and worries over and over. I think the book would have been a lot better had it been shortened.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from After Many Years Of Trying To Read This Book, I Finally Did! My friend had been trying to get me to read this book for the past 3+ years. I got half way and had no idea what was going on. A few months later I tried again, and I had no idea what was going on so I only got halfway again. Fast forward a bit, 2 months ago my friend and I decided we were going to see the movie together so (obviously) I was going to read the book first. And again, I got halfway and had no idea what happened and it was just a mess. But! Finally! I was determined to read it, so I took my time to understand everything and BOY WAS IT WORTH IT! This book had great characters, a very interesting story line and crazy plot twists! The ending DESTROYED ME OMG! I would definitely recommend this book, because of its amazingness. But I would recommend you take your time with it, so you really understand everything.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Okayish Honestly, I don't understand all the hype behind this novel. I found it was way too similar to other distopian teen novels but with less character development.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely an Amazing Book I bought this book because I heard it was going to be turned into a movie and I wanted to read it before it came out, and I'm not disappointed I did. This book is a real page-turner and the in-depth look at the characters gives you a sense of attachment to all of them. The many twists and turns allow for an addictive read that won't let you put the book down. I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
