A soccer dad misunderstands when he hears that his son's team needs his help. Instead of taking care of halftime snacks, the dad grabs a jersey and runs onto the field to play! And what an embarrassment he is: he hogs the ball, complains about his teammates and throws a hairy fit when the referee doesn't call a play his way! Can the boy find a way to teach his dad how to be a good sport before he drives the whole team crazy?

Maureen Fergus, a Blue Spruce Award winner, has the perfect touch in crafting comic role-reversal stories. The boy gets to prove he knows more than his father --- always a hit --- but the two maintain a close and loving relationship throughout. The simple lines of Mike Lowery's art reflect the story's offbeat premise and child's point of view. With hilarious lessons on being a good sport, following the rules and having patience with others, this picture book could spark conversations about self-awareness and managing relationships. It also works for character education lessons on empathy, compassion and perseverance, and is a terrific resource for coaches of all kinds.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hilarious Take on Sportsmanship The Day My Dad Joined My Soccer Team by Maureen Fergus and Mike Lowry is a super cute story about what it means to be a good sport. We have all seen the child who perhaps doesn’t want to play his or her assigned position, would rather play with the grass than kick the ball, or gets really intensely angry when his or her team is losing. Told in the voice of a young boy giving pointers and instruction to his Dad in a kind and nurturing way. What a great book to help your little All Star remember how to be a great player. Also not a bad reminder to all those parents out there who may get a little too involved in their child’s sports. Although it’s a soccer story, the lessons really translate to any sport. Maureen Fergus is so fantastic at taking an everyday life lesson and putting a clever spin on it, in this case making the child the teacher and the parent the person who needs to adjust their behaviour. With a comic feel, Mike Lowry’s art in this story is bright, colourful, and has some fun little details to add to the humour of the story.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A hilarious look at how not to behave when your on a team In this hilarious story the Dad does a big turn about and becomes the child. He is a poor sport, a jokester, and not a team player. What a great way to discuss how to play fair, cheer for your team, and show respect when you play sports. Bright illustrations will have young readers ages three to seven laughing and participating as the book is read aloud or they read it on their own.
