about

From the New York Times bestselling author of A Man Called Ove and Beartown comes a collection of three deeply moving stories about facing life’s greatest struggles.

Beloved author Fredrik Backman is back with a mesmerizing array of stories about discovering and treasuring what is truly important in life.

The Deal of a Lifetime is a profound and moving novella set on Christmas Eve. It tells the story of the intertwining destinies of a man who has built a global business empire but lost his family in the process and a courageous little girl fighting for her life, and it asks the question: if you had the chance to change your legacy, would you take it?

In the touching novella And Every Morning the Way Home Gets Longer and Longer, an elderly man sits on a bench with his son and grandson, reminiscing and telling jokes. As he recalls his most precious memories and faces his regrets, the man discovers there is one last thing he must do: help his family learn to say goodbye without fear.

Finally, “Sebastian and the Troll” is Fredrik Backman’s newest work—an eloquent short story about a young boy struggling with depression and how he finds the courage to discover the person he might become.

With his signature humor, compassion, and charm, Backman reminds us that life is a gift, and what matters most is how we share that gift with those we love.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A gift of a book Each of the 3 stories in this collection are gems, perfect gifts that say so much in every line, yet never feel like they're trying too hard. Fredrik Backman keeps getting better and better, with each new piece of writing feeling stronger than the one before. There's a sense of melancholy and nostalgia to these stories, and yet there's also a kind of love of life that exudes from them, leaving you with a bittersweet feeling every time. The illustrations throughout are a lovely little touch to enhance the stories, leaving the whole book feeling like it deserves to be given to every person in your life. Although only one of the stories has any kind of connection to Christmas, this is a fantastic gift idea for the holidays. I think it would make a brilliant stocking stuffer, or just a gift to show your appreciation to someone or give them something that may be small but has a very large emotional impact.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from No one can add such humour to farewells I normally don't enjoy short stories, especially those about loss as there is not normally enough time for character development and for one to grasp the full gravitas of a moment that changes everything. Yet Backman managed to make me cry and laugh within the same page and I found the stories very thought-provoking and touching.
