about

The outbreak devastated entire nations; what little hope would be found here?

It has been weeks since the First Wave broke, and a woefully unprepared mankind has steadily lost ground to the tide of infected. Overwhelmed by the sheer number and ferocity of the afflicted, the official response has abandoned its inland posts and collapsed back to the last line of defensible terrain.

Cut off from rescue and resupply, a desperate pocket of survivors cling to the notion of humanity while faced with a grim decision — is it worth it to be the last survivors of the human race, if you lose your humanity in the process?

Thoughtful and tense, The Decline is a gripping, atmospheric exploration of loss, isolation and the bleak realities of survival in a post-apocalyptic world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic read leaving you wanting more! Finished this awesome read a little while ago and thought I would give it a recommendation. It is a post outbreak story set here in Saint John and follows a band of survivors. It details a point of juncture for them and the fallout from their decisions. It is a very fast paced read that keeps you wanting more. The ending did leave me with questions and needing more resolutions, but I do have it under good authority that a sequel is being written. Christopher Jessulat's The Decline should be on you reading list! Very well written book with awesome character development. You can picture every building and road of Saint John that is used.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This one knocks it out of the park! While reading books written by indie authors, every once in a while you stumble upon a real gem. This book is one of those gems. Author Christopher Jessulat writes with a skill clearly well beyond his published experience. His ability to capture your attention as well as your imagination is put on clear display with this book. I couldn't stop reading. If you're new to the zombie genre, this work is much better than that produced by many seasoned veterans and is an excellent place to start. Or, if you're a zombie fanatic like myself, this book is a must have for the bookshelf. I found myself pleasantly surprised and cant wait for the next installment!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderfully immersing novel This book grabs a hold of you and sinks it's teeth in deep. A realistic approach to the end of the world, no superheroes, just regular folks trying to survive. A tale of huge losses and small victories. You'll be hooked and left wanting more. This is the zombie story we've been waiting for. Can't wait for the sequel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leaves you wanting more! I thoroughly enjoyed reading the decline and was really impressed with the character development and story telling. You always know you've read a good book when you feel a sense of loss when you reached the last page and there is no more to consume. I wished I could re immerse myself in the story and continue to follow the characters. I found it to be more focused on what happens to humanity in the end of days than zombies and gore. This novel would appeal to most genres of reader. I can't wait for the sequel!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read! The Decline is a rare literary gem hidden in a sea of apocalyptic horror fiction. As a compelling read from start to finish a reader can't help but become engrossed in the story. Its fast pace plot enhances your senses and heightens your anxiety the deeper you travel through the book. However, this is not your typical violence and gore novel. The writer carefully weaves the intricate story of its characters and their small town seamlessly through each chapter. Humanity’s determination back dropped against the beautifully battered city is what keeps you turning the pages. One can't help but feel emotion as the characters are thrust against such a horrifying reality. As a reader who is not normally drawn to this genre of fiction The Decline proved a truly worthwhile and captivating piece of literature. The novel has the advantage of appealing to any genre of reader but is still gruesome and paralyzing enough for any hardcore zombie fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely Simply put, I liked it....found it both entertaining and thought provoking. For me, its strengths are its characters ---a collection of flawed individuals struggling to do the best they can---and its theme---a focus on the contrast between the mindless malice of the "reanimated " and the conscious capacity for cruelty among the "human" beings. The question is : who exactly are the monsters? There are other highlights. There is humor....sometimes dark and ironic; sometimes easy and surprising in the midst of bleakness. There are bittersweet moments...unexpected when set against the grim realities of a city under siege. I have questions: What about....? How....? Why.....? and I look forward to finding the answers in a sequel. Christopher Jessulat has written a solid first novel. As he writes the next instalment, I'm sure he'll honing his craft and will present his readers with another reading treat.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Read Love this genre and this didn't disappoint. Characters were well developed and I found myself picking sides as the book progressed. The amount of detail allowed me to easily insert myself into the novel and seriously ponder what I would do given the situations, the allies, the enemies. Well written and a great balance of action and description. I am local to the area the book was written about which added another level of excitement for me as I was able to literally walk the path of the survivors. I hope this evolves into a series, this is a great start to an epic journey

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Stylish zombie read! I picked up a copy of The Decline after having it recommended to me. I'm usually more into supernatural/suspense type books but I loved the cover so I decided to pick up a copy. I was pleasantly surprised and really grateful I took the chance. There was a lot more emphasis on the thematic elements, character development and setting up conflict between them than I was expecting. The story is well thought out and smoothly told, making it very easy to get into. The little things and descriptions are what brings the characters and story alive. I was really pulling for the characters. Each one felt unique and believable, with their own motivations and strategies for surviving the end of daysx. The Decline strikes a great balance - enough action that the pages turn fast and it will appeal to fans of the zombie/survival genre, but its coupled with the right amount of storytelling and stylish writing that it is immersion and would appeal to a much broader audience. I believe in spoiler-free reviews, but suffice to say - this is definitely set up to form part of a series. A great first novel!
