A (Very) Brief History of DietingDiets are anything but new. The first popular diet was a lowcarb diet written by a British coffin maker in 1863. His name was William Banting, and the diet he championed and detailed in his Letter on Corpulence, Addressed to the Public was of the lowcarb variety with an emphasis on eating meat, greens, and fruit while avoiding sugar, starches, dairy, and beer.
