Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Campaign adventure Easy to follow. I liked how it turned into a Campaign with various characters of different 'species'. The author did have a few suprises but nothing that kept me on edge for the most part fairly predictable. looking forward to grabbing the second part "the War of the Dwarves" by Markus Heirtz

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic Epic Fantasy I kept looking at the cover of this book and wanting to read it, after a customer told me it was really good, I decided it was time. I was sucked into the story from the beginning and didn't want to put it down. I drove my husband crazy because I kept holding the book in his face and pointing at the cover telling him I wanted Tungdil to be my friend. All jokes aside, if you like fantasy this is a MUST read! I promise you will love it. There is another book coming out in March, watch for it, you will want to read it. BUY IT!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from It took me on an incredible adventure! When I think about all the novels I have read, especially within the Fantasy and Science Fiction genres, I have never felt like I had been taken on an epic adventure more than with Markus Heitz's The Dwarves. From start to finish (and it is quite a long book, although it does not feel that way at all) Heitz builds up his characters using a combination of commonly held ideas about Dwarves meshed with his own take on the nuances of Dwarven culture. Setting that aside, the story itself is complex, interwoven with obstacles, challenges, and emotional highs and lows, all presented in a gritty realism that draws the reader into the story and refuses to let them go until it is over. I loved this book; hands down I loved it. If you enjoy the Fantasy genre and you are looking for an incredible way to escape for a few days you need to pick up a copy of this book, trust me, you won't regret it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One of the best fantasybooks of the last years The reader will be send on a journey through the countrys of this world. The main characters in the book are put together with love. Through the whole story i never thought that anyone was acting out of character. The Story itself has some twists and knows to fascinate till the end. Even if it is a long book its over way too soon. The only reason I gave this book 4 leaves instead of five is that I already know the sequel...and it beats this book slightly. This book is a must read for every fantasy fan!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Absolutely great! Well it's long but good. The story revolves around Tungdil. A foundling dwarf raised by a human magus. For the first sixty odd years of his life Tungdil had never even seen another dwarf. When he's sent out on a delivery mission for the magus Tungdil runs into a pair of dwarf twins. Turns out that the dwarf twins where looking for Tungdil. Tungdil is to be a contender for the position of high king of the dwarves. The other contender being poisoned by hatred against the elves. While all this is going on, the realms of the goodly are being over run by evil. A magus has turned traitor and is determined to conquer the world for evil. As I said it's a fairly long read and even though it was originally written in german(I think) it reads well. There are some shortcomings of course. A couple of the characters introduced fairly early on might as well have been wearing star trek red shirts.(meaning marked for death to you non-trekkies) I was kind of expecting a 'bait and switch' with the traitors in the story. But no joy. Those you think are evil are eventually revealed as evil. As I understand it the sequel to this book is already written but won't be coming out till march 2010. So a wee bit of a wait to find out what new evil will destroy the happily ever after of the main characters.
