This volume breaks new ground in the economic theory of institutions. The contributors show how some of the tools of advanced economic theory can usefully contribute to an understanding of how institutions operate. They show how sound theoretical analysis can in fact enable economists to reachconclusions which will help practitioners avoid many pitfalls in the formation and implementation of development policies, both within individual countries and in the context of international aid.

From Our Editors

This volume demonstrates that advanced economic theory provides tools which may usefully be applied to an understanding of the operation of institutions, in the case with particular and significant implications for the problems faced by poor agrarian economies. While many economist accept the institutions are of fundamental importance, this recognition has until recently rarely been matched by the application of rigorous analysis of their formation and behavior, tending rather to confine itself to descriptive studies.

Editorial Reviews

'This is an important book to which non-economists should pay good heed ... It is a collection of excellent papers which can be considered to be part of a general upsurge of 'new-institutionalism' across the social sciences. This volume should be welcomed as a refreshing and valuable startingpoint for renewed cross-disciplinary debate in development studies, for which all the contributors are to be congratulated.'J.
