Rated 5 out of 5 by from Coleman Barks Rocks I just bought this new expanded version of The Essential Rumi translated by Coleman Barks and it is fabulous! My first encounter with Coleman Barks and Rumi was a few years ago through the CBC program Tapestry. What I heard so fascinated me that I bought one of the Rumi poetry collections at the first opportunity, and lived with it on my window-seat for months, delving into "the divine madness" in Rumi's poetry time and time again. I loaned the book several times and eventually lost track of it. Now I have this new edition, which contains an additional 81 new, never-before-published poems, and am once again wowed by Rumi through the translations of Coleman Barks. Both the poetry and Barks' notes are stunningly beautiful, and the books itself - cover art, layout, and quality of the paper, add to the delight of reading it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Timeless energy Everyone raves about Rumi -- and this is really a good introduction to him. It captures wonderfully, his many different moods. There is something special about Rumi, and the translation is so well done, the choice of the words seems to fit so well ... one thinks that it must been written in English at the start! There are of course also so deep spiritual lessons here -- if you go under the sheer beauty of the poetry.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An Amazing Book When I first bought this book I read it cover to cover, and since then I often pick it up, let it open on it's own, and read those pages. This is a fantastic book - a lovely collaboration between Rumi and Barks culminating in poetry that is deeply philosophical, intelligent, and beautiful. The poetry is readable on both a surface level and at much deeper levels making it appropriate for both light and heavy reads. A must-have for any Rumi or Barks fan.
