Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great classic I always found The Fall of the House of Usher to be underrated in comparison to other Poe classics. It’s notorious enough, but you’re probably likelier to have heard of The Tell-Tale Heart or The Raven amongst others. What sets Usher apart from these tales is its pacing and how much it draws upon architecture in addition to literal atmosphere; which is kind of reminiscent of Poe’s essay “The Philosophy of Furniture.” I appreciated how the titular house served as a metaphor for the melancholic, declining personae as much as a framing device; how its disrepair and dissolution parallel its ambiguous residents.
