Ele Pawelski's thought-provoking novella, The Finest Supermarket in Kabul, bursts into the world at the perfect time. Set in Afghanistan in 2011, three divergent characters end up in the same place at the same time when a suicide bomb detonates. Merza, a new and naïve parliamentarian, receives ominous threats after he wins his seat; Alec, an American journalist looks for a scoop on modern daily life in the ravaged capital; Elyssa, a Canadian human rights worker gets unwanted attention from a powerful male magistrate. These three diverse perspectives collide in the dramatic and savage bombing, and are never the same.
Ele Pawelski managed human rights projects in Kabul, Afghanistan and other danger-pay-locales for a decade before returning home to Toronto. She has published stories in the Nashwaak Review and The Globe and Mail. She still keeps a bag packed for spontaneous trips.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A page turner! An insightful novella set in Afghanistan. After a brutal opening the story delicately unfolds through the eyes of three characters: Merza, a young idealistic, recently elected parliamentarian, Alec, an experienced American journalist with many war zone postings under his belt, and Elyssa, a Canadian lawyer, there to train local female judges. How will their lives unfold over the course of a day, and how will each be impacted by the bombing? This is an enthralling story!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I loved this book This is book that creates three unique perspectives of the same event. Three very different people share a life changing experience but because of who they are and where they have come from the experiences reflect each person's background and are vastly different. It is a gripping tale that offers insight into the complexity of Afghan political and social life. Highly recommended.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Novella I really Liked this book. The plot revolves around the suicide bombing of a supermarket in Kabul. Although the three main characters are strangers, their stories all intersect or overlap in some way as a result of the bombing. This was a quick read that was very enjoyable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A compelling read, skillfully written. Ele made a unstable, dangerous, but distant environment present and personal with this book. I was completely drawn into the lives of these three people, who are so relatable in their personal, family and career matters, and so courageous and human in their choices. It's insightful, informative, and inspiring.
