#1 New York Times bestselling author David Baldacci as you've never seen him before.

Why would Quentin Herms flee into the Quag? There was nothing in the Quag except certain death.

Vega Jane has never left the village of Wormwood. But this isn't unusual - nobody has ever left the village of Wormwood. At least not until Quentin Herms vanishes into the unknown.

Vega knows Quentin didn't just leave - he was chased. And he's left behind a very dangerous trail of clues that only she can decode.

The Quag is a dark forest filled with terrifying beasts and bloodthirsty Outliers. But just as deadly are the threats that exist within the walls of Wormwood. It is a place built on lies, where influential people are willing to kill to keep their secrets. Vega is determined to uncover the truth - but the closer she gets, the more she risks her life.

DAVID BALDACCI is the author of over twenty books for adults, each of which has become both a national and international bestseller. His astonishing career started with Absolute Power, which was adapted into a major motion picture starring Clint Eastwood. Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Finisher The Finisher was a very enjoyable read, and at times it was a page turner. Although it seemed to take some time for the story to develop, it was satisfying in the end. It would appear there is some room for a sequel, and I hope it is not too long in coming because I look forward to the continuing adventures of Vega and Delph.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Great Fantasy Adventure! "The Finisher" is the first of David Balducci's forays into the world of literary fantasy and he does it with panache. Set in Wormwood an island surrounded by an impenetrable barrier inhabited by vicious creatures, fourteen year old Vega Jane is faced with a astounding discovery; her friend and mentor at the Stacks has vanished into the Quag. He leaves behind a map to the hostile territory with the instruction that she is to use it to escape. What begins is not only an adventure which will awaken Vega to the lies, secrets and deceit in Wormwood , but also a struggle to survive the magical force that wants to see her dead. In the isolated community of Wormwood David Balducci has built an unusual society with its own unique customs and language. In this male dominated culture a powerful ruling Council lead by the scholarly Thansius and the enigmatic Morrigone controls the various factions of Wugmorts through fear, injustice and bullying. Blind to the manipulation, everyone but one unconsciously accepts the dictates of the Council; only Vega Jane has begun to question, seeking answers to the lies and secrets that have multiplied since her mentor vanished. In the narrow-mindedness, violence and mystery within this community David Balducci has woven elements of friendship, freedom and unconditional love. The pages of this exciting and riveting story are filled with curious and sometimes deadly creatures like the Jabbits with their multiple heads and poison fangs as well as magical artifacts like the Destin and Elemental. The personalities of the characters are well-developed and realistic with all their strengths and weaknesses, especially the hardworking, no-nonsense and blunt-spoken fourteen year old Vega Jane. Independent, headstrong and stubborn she is a young female Wugmort whose heart and courage will turn disaster into triumph. Her friend Daniel Delphia is strong and clever while her highly intelligent brother, twelve year old John Jane is easily manipulated through his pride and arrogance. I liked the transformation of Julius Domitar who at first seems untrustworthy and hostile but deep down is knowledgeable and supportive. Among the unforgettable bullies that live in Wormwood is the snide, nasty and devious Cletus Loon, the maniac Ladon -Tosh, and Jurik Krone the self-important, vicious, smooth-talking deputy to Thansius. This is a fast-paced, action-packed story that I hope is just the first in an adventure that will take Vega Jane, Daniel Delphia and Harry Two out of Wormwood and across the vast reaches to the Quag. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend it to those that love a great fantasy story

Editorial Reviews

Praise for The Finisher:#1 New York Times Bestseller"This vividly described tale takes readers to an original fantasy world full of strange creatures, intriguing relationships, and long-lost secrets. Baldacci knows how to deliver thrills." -Brandon Mull, New York Times bestselling author of the Fablehaven series* "[Baldacci] offers readers a smart, tough heroine worth rooting for; provides enough hints of a mysterious backstory to keep them wondering; and builds each chapter to a cliffhanger that pushes them to turn the page. There is also head spinning action." -Booklist, starred review"Consistently using smarts, cunning, and improvisation, Vega proves herself a strong, admirable heroine as she's thrown through time, uncovers lies and mysteries, and takes possession of magical artifacts." -Publishers Weekly"The imaginative and multilayered world is the novel's strength, with the bleak, ancient village serving as a stark contrast to the fantastical adventures and challenges the teen faces in her quest for the truth." -School Library Journal"...Readers will likely eagerly anticipate the next installment of Vega Jane's life." -Bulletin of The Center for Children's Books
