about

Stop Seeking Happiness; Just Get Out of Its Way!Happiness is our natural state, for each of us and for humanity as a whole, argues John Izzo. But that happiness is being stolen by insidious mental patterns that he depicts as thieves: the thief of control, the thief of conceit, the thief of coveting, the thief of consumption, and the thief of comfort. He discovered these thieves as he sought the true source of happiness during a year-long sabbatical, walking the Camino de Santiago in Spain and living in the Andes of Peru. This thoughtful and inspiring book describes the disguises these thieves wear, the tools they use to break into our hearts, and how to lock them out once and for all. Izzo shows how these same thieves of personal happiness are destroying society as well. This book will help us all discover, develop, and defend the happiness that is our true nature while creating a world we all want to live in.
John Izzo, PhD, is a sought-after speaker and powerful storyteller who is the author or coauthor of six books, including The Five Secrets You Must Discover Before You Die, Stepping Up, and Awakening Corporate Soul.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from John Izzo has a knack for writing easy to read books with profound and powerful messages. The Five Thieves is a very helpful read. It is a simple and straight-forward guide for re-shaping how you think about yourself and the world around you. Izzo is thoughtful and pan-theological. He sees the value in myths of multiple faith traditions and the meditative practices which support many of them. I would be interested to hear the opinions of secularists on his thoughts but found him supportive of multiple ways of viewing the world and the human place in it. A very practical book about life, the universe and everything.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Why do self help books over explain? I don't disagree with any of the author's points - if you want to be happy, don't compare, don't mindlessly consume, get over your little ego and recognize your connectedness to all things, etc. He 's a bit less forthcoming on the details of how to do some of these things in our modern world, but no matter. But there's little new here. A collection of quotes from Pinterest could give you the same information in less time. It's all pretty inane greeting card philosophy that is a pleasant read that will do little to challenge your intellect or get you out of your comfort zone.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Superb. A timely, must-read book. Best of its kind in the happiness (and beyond) genre. In a world of overwhelming (and often repetitive) expert self-help wisdom, this new book by Dr. John Izzo is a total revelation. Dr. Izzo defines for us the "5 thieves of happiness" – how to be aware of them, and through this awareness, how to maintain a joyful state and in so doing, ultimately make a real difference in the world. Dr. Izzo offers a succinct and astute mantra after each chapter (i.e.,“I am not my patterns”) and these serve as helpful "sound bites" that we can easily commit to memory in order to strengthen and deepen our happiness practice. Having recently undergone a profound personal transformation himself, Dr. Izzo is perfectly positioned to guide us all - as individuals, and as agents for change within society - to do the same. And he succeeds. Most books in this category are “inspirational,” but do not necessarily lead to real transformation. Not the case here. I’ve now read The Five Thieves of Happiness" cover to cover and it will stay on my bedside table as a lifelong reference. I have gifted the book to everyone I know. Dr. Izzo, thank you!
