Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great for personal growth I loved how easy to follow this book was. The ideas were clear and concise and very practical. It is written in a way that is not attacking and gave me a lot of food for thought. I go back and reference this book from time to time, mostly to help friends who are in need of these insightful words. Worth reading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very insightful! I first read this book when I borrowed it from the library and couldn't get enough! It's a book I can see myself reading over and over as a reminder of the path towards a better mindset so I I decided to purchase it. The book relies on repetition and I found after even just the first read I would catch myself in day-to-day life going down a path that would lead me to feeling down and correcting my train of thought before getting lost. This book is definitely an eye opener and even though the agreements are SO SIMPLE the author put them in words to help you realize how these simple things can negatively affect your life.
Date published: 2018-04-28
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Intersting This book explains simple ways you can change your mindset to better enjoy your life. However, it is very very repetitive - which could be a method of getting the reader to remember the agreements.

Date published: 2017-02-05
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Loved the concepts, but very repetitive I really enjoyed the overall message shared in this book, however I did find it very repetitive to read; the author over explained things using different examples - which may be helpful to some, but I just found myself skimming over a lot of it because I understood the concept with the first example or explanation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Incredible Book This book has been so useful in sorting out so many things out in my personal development which flow into everything I do, every relationship and a general outlook on life. Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book I think it's a great book! it's very good for someone looking for a positive self-development. Are there other books out there that could help? most definitely! but it takes away nothing from the simplicity of this book's explication of life's events and how one should look at things in order to feel better and live better. It is nothing new that we learn in this book, but most certainly a reminder of things not to forget about one's self and attitude we should have in order to live at peace with ourselves and then others.
Date published: 2017-01-17
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyable read A good book worth reading.
Date published: 2017-01-01
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nothing new but still insightful I did like this book. It was a short one but it was packed full of thought provoking content. Don't get me wrong though, none of the content is new. All of these suggestions to improve your life are pretty consistent throughout most personal development and self-growth books. However, with that being said, it's difficult getting to that point of applying each of these principles wholeheartedly into your life without giving up when it gets hard. That is why I find this book (along with others with similar messages) are important. To help reinforce and repeat the content, sending the message to readers to try and make a change again. I also have to add that along with everything an individual may read, imagine putting every book through a filter/strainer. Take what you want from it and leave the rest (that you may not agree with) behind.

It is an excellent way of looking at the unspoken truths we learn unconsciously and a great way to rewrite them. If you are struggling with taking things personally...this is a great book for you to read. It is a quick read and has very practical application in life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Pleased Even though some reviews mention this book to be repetitive or common sense. I believe it summed things up and played then out in a great way. I feel like even though some of us know we should live this way we don't always. It's a nice reminder and I was very happy with it. Great read :)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An old message still equates to modern wisdom The Ten Commandments, the Tao, the “Golden Rule”, and also the “Four Agreements: what do they all have in common? Well, I’m sure there are many things; however, I want to focus on something that resonates with me. It seems to me, and I am admittedly biased, that so many of life’s great lessons are actually quite simple in their instruction, yet not always so simple in their application. Don Miguel’s book, “The Four Agreements” outlines one major idea/agreement, “Be impeccable with your word” that is supported by three other “agreements”: “Don’t make assumptions”, “Don’t take anything personally”, and “Always do your best.” The author feels, as do I, that when a person implements these agreements consistently into their life then the quality of life will improve; however, as is so often the case, some of us are quick to agree with an idea, we say we “Know that already” and then we go back to our old ways. As with any great wisdom, applying the idea consistently into our relationships with others, and with life in general, is the true challenge. If things aren’t working for us, then perhaps we need to alter our perceptions and establish new “agreements” that better serve us and humanity. Although I enjoyed this book and the message it shares, I am a long way from consistently heeding the words it contains. Bottom line: if everything in your life is working, then you don’t need this book. If, like most of us though, you are looking to find ways to make improvements, then this book is one more tool to help you do so.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Four Agreements A life changer!
Date published: 2013-05-12
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Obvious and repetitive Well, there is a lot to be said about this book. First, it is a book about Toltec Wisdom and how to find personal freedom. It is divided into seven categories: an introduction and start of the Toltec tradition, the four agreements, the path to freedom and a new dream. It is a very short book, laid out in a very read-able way. It is easy to follow and easy to understand. The four agreements that Ruiz talks about are: Be Impeccable with Your Word Don't Take Anything Personally Don't Make Assumptions Always Do Your Best Ok, thanks for that. Those are rules of life that anyone should follow. So what makes this book so special? To be honest, not that much. Don't get me wrong here, it was a very good book. And yet, it just seemed like it was pure common sense. Or maybe it was just that I kept hearing such good things about this book that I had great expectations and it was impossible for this book to meet them. And then again, maybe I just have common sense. There was nothing new or special brought up in this book. Sure, it's nice to have something like this summed up, and stuff like this is always good for self-reflection, but nothing was said in this book that I couldn't learn from any other major religion, spiritual approach or just life itself. There are also great analogies and examples brought up in this book, and Ruiz does a great job of writing. I hate to sound repetitive, but there's nothing special here. Oh, and speaking of repetitive: How many times does someone have to repeat one of the agreements before it sinks in a person's head. For me, once was enough, twice was ok, three times was more than enough and Ruiz repeated it way past three times. It was almost like I was self-hypnotizing myself or something. Wow, it seems like I've come down pretty hard on this book. That was not my intention. It was a good book - an excellent summary of how a person should live his/her life. And you learned something about Toltec wisdom - that was new for me. Definitely give this book a read, but don't expect it to transform your life or do anything drastic for you!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Applicable to Everyday Life After reading a number of "self help" books I was skeptical but a good friend insisted it was worth the effort and one year later I have to say I Strongly Agree. One starts to perceive everyday interactions differently and simply reviewing the "Four Agreements" in one's mind during confrontational or stressful situations has a positive effect. Explicitly vocalizing assumptions seems to defuse the tension that occurs in many groups. Overall this is the best personal development book in terms of overall positive impact and I have purchased several copies for friends and family.
Date published: 2011-11-29
Rated 4 out of 5 by from 1 Agreement - It's Great A stunningly simplistic breakdown of positive self-development. This book is great for readers of all capacities, it's very easy to understand and gives you the tools for making positive changes in your life. I find the topic is of similiar nature to most books, the bonus is, this read is not nearly as 'heavy' as others and gives you the same types of practices for making marked changes.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read This book was so great. It provides personal insight into how to radically change your life in a gentle and easy way. The author presents such basic yet powerful ideas on how to be in the world that brings about personal empowerment and spiritual freedom. This book brought me insight into myself and those around me. As a therapist, I also use it with clients in helping them find the personal and spiritual freedom they are skeeing. I recommend this book to anyone who wants to self-reflect and change their life.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Title This book keeps the message simple and to the point. The world will be a better place when more people read this little book which contains wisdom and encouragement. So when you are looking for a great gift to give someone (including yourself) this is a gift of great knowledge that will give them much more than a book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good for Yogis Although not a Yoga book per se, this book encapsulates the essence of so many Yoga texts without the use of complicated Sanskrit terms. Simple and elegant Ruiz uses the wisdom of the Toltecs to describe how the words we use, and the thoughts we think, shape the life we lead. By making these four agreements with ourselves, we can live more in balance with our world.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Life Altering I found this book to be very enlightening. It was easy to read and understand, providing a simple way of living life and more importantly respecting ones self and others. It helped me realize the importance of how we view the word around us and how we have the power to accept the positive in our lifes. I have recommended this book to many of my friends who have also found it to be life altering.
Date published: 2007-02-14
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Too Simple I didn't think that this book was very well written at all. I found it over-simplified and much too vague. I felt that the book only dealt with issues at a superficial level and didn't look at the deeper issues within people. However, it is a book that will help you become a better person even if it is with one very small step at a time. I would recommend the book "The Road Less Traveled" by Scott Peck. I think it is a much more intelligent book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple and practical Every religion and philosophy have certain rules in common. In this book, one can see the main rules of psychological (and moral) well-being in a simple-easily understandable form. Also it is very helpful to read about the practical usage of these rules.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Phenomenal This is an all-time classic book that allows one to understand and explain certain things in life. It is a very elegantly put synopsis of why things are the way they are and helping one accept the way life's patterns run. Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enlightening I found the basis of these principles very simple and practical to understand. It helped me to reflect on my life, and how I interact with family and friends. It has provided me with some guidance during a time of personal challenges. Certainly an easy read and well recommended. Thank you Don!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Inspring I loved it! It showed me how to live a better life in words I could understand and ways I could follow. It showed me how others words and my words could hurt and be hurt. It also showed me that people sometimes are wrong and sometimes people are right, and how to take those words and turn them into a life long lesson.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Four Agreements Totally Outstanding. I travel a lot, I'm into audio books. I've had this one over two years. I re-listen to it every 2 to 3 months, I want its wisdom imprinted absolutely, it assists my personal freedom and development on a daily basis.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Four Agreements Simple, Concise and Powerful. Ruiz gives us an insightful and practical method for living. The four agreements will heal your life and show you who you really are.
Date published: 2001-10-19
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Excruciating banality The philosophy dispensed by this book flows freely at most sixteen-year-olds' dope parties, and is often more coherent and interesting there. If you don't crave encouragement in blaming your parents and other failed relationships for your own shortcomings, and/or if you're suspicious of the notion that a great society will spring from billions of people rejecting codes of behaviour and acting on their own "don't worry, be happy" impulses, then read the four good ideas on the flyleaf and buy something else.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A simple lesson in life Miguel Ruiz has written a solid book on spirituality and personal fullfilment. His Toltec teachings are genuine and simple yet powerful enough to inspire us to take action. His writing style is different from the average self-help (I call them shelf-help) books as he is sincere about his guidance in life. The only downside to this book was its wordiness. This book could have been written in 50 pages. There is a lot of redundancy in Miguel's writing. I would still recommend it to anyone looking to improve his/her life. 1. Be Impeccable with Your word. 2. Don't Take Anything Personally. 3. Don't Make Assumptions. 4. Always Do Your Best.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So simple but so powerful I was anxious to get this book after hearing about it on Oprah. I got it after Christmas and once I started reading it I couldn't put it down. It was so powerful. The concepts are so simple but once you think about them they make perfect sense. I put the Four Agreements onto the fridge and look at them everyday and I am amazed at what a change it has made in my life. I feel more free and in control of my own life or Dream. I have the power instead of everyone else. I have the chance to control where I am going with my life. I only wish that I could make others read the book as well. I could see where it could help others. When you see how far negative propaganda can spread you wonder why positive, life changing propaganda doesn't? I thought this was a wonderful book and would recommend it to EVERYONE!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Life Changing "The Four Agreements" is a life changer. It will transform the way you think and what you think and lead you to a better you! It has transformed my life. It is a book that everyone can understand (even kids) but that may take a few readings to sink in as the messages are so big. ENJOY!

Employee Review

Ruiz has based this book on ancient Toltec wisdom from what is now Mexico. He explains the basis for the formulation of the four agreements, and how we can practice them in our daily lives. They are: 1) be impeccable with your word; 2) don't take anything personally; 3) don't make assumptions; 4) always do your best. After purchasing the book and practicing the four agreements, I have to agree with Oprah that these agreements can be life-altering. They are anything but simple and require a great deal of work, but I think you will agree with me that this book is worth it. Highly recommended.
