Rated 1 out of 5 by from Unadulterated crap Nope nope nope nope nope. Seriously? Se7en meets Silence of the Lambs? How about, this author wishes he had half of Thomas Harris' talent to write a solid cat-and-mouse thriller? This book read very much as a paint-by-numbers thriller, or something where someone pulled Thriller Plot #3 (copyright and patent pending) and just filled in the names. There's the deadly serious cop that's been chasing the serial killer for years. There's his wisecracking partner. There's the sassy female cop that has some slight sexual tension for the wisecracker, and nothing but sympathy for the lead. There's the bullish sergeant. There's the standard false leads (that broadcast their falseness far too loudly) and the inevitable puzzle pieces that the killer leaves to lead the cops on a merry chase. There's also the diary that details the ridiculous and patently stupid early childhood of the 4MK killer, who's father sounds like Beaver Cleaver's father from the late 50s/early 60s, even though it must have taken place in the late 90s, early 2000s. It just felt as though the whole damn thing was crafted for maximum public appeal, and a nice bidding war for television or movies...apparently all of which it achieved. So much BS. Yeah, don't expect a review from me for the next book. I'm stating here and now that I'm totally bailing on this ridiculous series. What crap. I'll go back and read Red Dragon or Silence of the Lambs before I'll wade into this particular cesspool again.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very immersive, for better or worse I could not put this book down once I started reading. It also does a very good job describing some of the super graphic scenes to the point where I found myself skimming ahead a little to avoid the graphic imagery. I'm not really one to shy away from horror scenes so this was a pleasant surprise for me!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Could Not Put This Down I picked this book based solely on "Seven meets Silence of the Lambs". Did not know the story or author. I was hooked right away, read the whole thing in 3 days. I can't wait for the next book! I loved the change of view with each chapter. It gave just enough and always left you wanting more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Definitely not a slow read! As the story began, I thought I wouldn't be too keen because it's really quite nasty situations. But the pages kept turning, and I was wrapped up in the characters, and definitely wanted to find out what happened to all of them! So well written, there was no part where it became slow or boring. And I read it much too fast.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVED!!! The Fourth Monkey, by J.D Barker, was one of my most anticipated summer reads. Any book that draws a comparison to Silence of the Lambs and Se7en immediately had my attention. After I have finished my reading, one thing stands clear regarding this title- this book lives up to the hype. Fast paced, complex and filled with twists and turns, once I picked up this novel, it was incredibly hard to put down. When The Fourth Monkey opens, we meet Detective Sam Porter, who seems to be on a leave from the police force when he is suddenly called back to the scene of an apparent suicide. Not truly understanding what his purpose it at this crime scene, his questions are soon answered when a box is found containing an ear. The first signature of The Four-Monkey killer (4MK), a serial killer case that Sam has been lead investigator on for over five years. When he finds a diary in the pocket of the deceased, Sam is given entry into the mind of a psychopath and must begin to unravel a twisted history in order to try to find his latest victim…a victim they hope is still alive. Crazy right?? My first thought that I need to get out is Wow. Where do I even begin? I absolutely loved this novel. To say it was masterfully written would be a vast understatement. Barker is brilliant. As a self-professed struggler of any police procedural style novels, this one broke down any barriers or issues I had with the genre. The characters in this one are fantastic. Sam Porter is incredibly likeable with a stellar backstory that is slowly weaved out throughout the plot. His partner, Nash, offers comedic relief and had me laughing out loud throughout. The camaraderie between the two made this book stand out. I loved the narrative style with this one too, the novel is told in part through Porter as he investigates, but also through the eyes of one of the 4MK’s victims and through the psychopath’s diary as he explains his childhood and interesting upbringing. At times, I was so consumed by these chapters, I felt like skipping through the other narrations so I could have more of this perspective! Deliciously dark and dangerous, I couldn’t help but be fascinated by his mindset. At this point, this novel has me feeling a serious "book hangover". And, with that ending, I am really hoping this will not be the last that I will read about these characters.
