Hemingway started this novel in 1946. It was unfinished when he shot himself in 1961, and was published posthumously with some minor edits. Regardless, the novel definitely speaks with Hemingway’s distinctive voice of simple declarative sentences, spare and clear.

The substance of the story departs from Hemingway’s previous themes. The protagonist, David Bourne, a writer, is not the typical Hemingway man, who looks good and always does things right, with a beautiful adoring woman by his side. In The Garden, the female lead runs the show and is by far the most interesting character. The Garden reveals a different side of Hemingway and it’s a fascinating read. If David is correct that a writer is only allowed so many great works, Hemingway’s allotment included this one.
