about

#1 New York Times Bestseller

"Amy Schumer's book will make you love her even more. For a comedian of unbridled (and generally hilarious) causticity, Schumer has written a probing, confessional, unguarded, and, yes, majorly humanizing non-memoir, a book that trades less on sarcasm, and more on emotional resonance." —Vogue

"The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo is an alternatingly meditative, sexually explicit, side-splittingly hilarious, heart-wrenching, disturbing, passionately political, and always staggeringly authentic ride through the highs and lows of the comedic powerhouse's life to date." —Harper's Bazaar

"This is your happy hour with Amy Schumer...It's Bossypants meets Trainwreck meets your long weekend." —TheSkimm

“Amy’s got your back. She’s in your corner. She’s an honesty bomb. And she’s coming for you.
—Actress Tilda Swinton and Trainwreck co-star

The Emmy Award-winning comedian, actress, writer, and star of Inside Amy Schumer and the acclaimed film Trainwreck has taken the entertainment world by storm with her winning blend of smart, satirical humor. Now, Amy Schumer has written a refreshingly candid and uproariously funny collection of (extremely) personal and observational essays.

In The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo, Amy mines her past for stories about her teenage years, her family, relationships, and sex and shares the experiences that have shaped who she is—a woman with the courage to bare her soul to stand up for what she believes in, all while making us laugh.

Ranging from the raucous to the romantic, the heartfelt to the harrowing, this highly entertaining and universally appealing collection is the literary equivalent of a night out with your best friend—an unforgettable and fun adventure that you wish could last forever. Whether she’s experiencing lust-at-first-sight while in the airport security line, sharing her own views on love and marriage, admitting to being an introvert, or discovering her cross-fit instructor’s secret bad habit, Amy Schumer proves to be a bighearted, brave, and thoughtful storyteller that will leave you nodding your head in recognition, laughing out loud, and sobbing uncontrollably—but only because it’s over.
Amy Schumer was born on June 1, 1981 in Manhattan, New York City, New York. She is a graduate of Townson University with a degree in theater. She is a stand-up comedian, actress, writer, and producer. She considers herself a feminist and addresses social issues through her comedy and writing. Her film work includes Trainwreck, which sh...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious! A great light read and will not disappoint!
Date published: 2017-10-12
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyed it I found this book was not totally what I expected it to be but overall it was good. It gives a personal background on Amy's family and her childhood and it made me like her a bit more even because she seems like a real person with feelings. Overall it wasn't that "funny" but it does make me understand her past and some of the stories are quite interesting.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Humourous but vulnerable at the same time Amy Schumer describes her childhood and adolescence and how she became the successful comedian she is today with humour and vulnerability. An eye-opening read - there is more to her than people think.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lots of Laughs If you are a fan of hers, you will enjoy this book. Light and fun; perfect for vacation!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A pleasant suprise Amy has a way of finding humor in life challenges and difficult situation. A great read.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Funniest book around Amy Schumer is always a must. If you wanna have a fun time and laugh at loud this is the right book for you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldnt put it down Her book was definitely different than I expected. I love her humour so I read it for her jokes and funny stories but was surprised at how candid she was, retelling very personal stories. Not only was she incredibly honest, she does so in a such a funny way, I couldn't put it down. Not to mention the many moments I laughed out loud and couldn't stop, it was a great book and would read it again and again.

Date published: 2017-08-23
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not bad... I am a fan of Amy and her comedy, however I was slightly disappointed reading this one. The stories were interesting, but seemed that she was trying too hard to come off as a funny author. Just not my style for a bibliography

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Funny & Honest I got curious about this book while I was binging on celebrity biographies, I must say I didn't come away disappointed. Schumer has a way of writing that is engaging and simple. During her sadder moments in the book I really did feel connected to a woman whom I have never met other than via tv, and that is where Schumer's strength lies. She's never apologetic about the pieces she's decided to share with us, open about the emtional rollercoaster that is her life, sweet when the time calls for it, and bluntly honest. It was refreshing to read a book about a person I don't give much mental time to, if she decided to write another book, I'd pick it up. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it! Bought this book to read on a trip. finished it in the first two days. Great light read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lots of Laugh Out Loud moments!! The audiobook version narrated by the author was very very funny! I read this while doing my long runs and time totally flew by.
Date published: 2017-07-05
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Very Honest and Wisdom-y I would love to give this a higher rating, but it took me almost 3 months to finish. First of all, I love Amy Schumer. Some girlfriends and I went to see her on a Tuesday night in the winter in a huge arena with a few thousand women and a scattering of men. Her new special on Netflix is basically what she covered, and many people (my husband, for one) find her too crude. But here's the thing: for that night, the energy in that stadium was charged with laughter of thousands of women laughing at what happens to... well... women! It was so nice to just laugh and not be embarrassed! My pregnant friend literally laughed so hard she pee'd a little, which was even funnier. I feel like she'd be a great friend, and that we have a lot in common (no, really!). I don't feel like an entire book was the right set-up for her, however. A collection of essays would have maybe been a better fit? Something is lost in translation. But it's her life, and she was very honest in it, so kudos for that! She is "brave" but not in the "posting a swimsuit picture" awful way, but in the "standing up for what she believes in" kinda of way. I will always be grateful to her for giving us gals a night to bond over her life observations, and am cheering for her next venture.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Spectacular! I think every woman should read this book! While you may expect it to be a humorous tale of her life, Amy is able to write a powerful novel that makes you laugh, cry and feel every emotion possible. Absolutely loved it from beginning to end!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE THIS LOVE AMY I do not know why Amy gets so much hate. This book was amazing and I find myself wanting to buy the audio version just to listen to her tell the stories.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Relatable and Hilarious I got this book as a gift and have found it to be funny and heartfelt. It has been relatable on some levels, and while some things are uncomfortable and personal for Amy she is able to bring amusment and positivity. Totally recommend it!
Date published: 2017-06-16
Rated 5 out of 5 by from I loved this! I honestly wasn't sure I'd be able to get into this book. Not because I don't like Amy Schumer, but because I'm not really into the "autobiography" style. However, I couldn't put this book down! I related to Amy on so many levels, and her humour had me laughing out loud more than once.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Read I really enjoyed this book. I'm a fan of Amy Schumer and I thought this book would be 100% humour, but it's actually got some very poignant points. Very interesting read if you're a fan of Amy!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great book! This book was funny, serious, truthful and interesting in so many ways. This book gave me a new perspective on Amy Schumer. She is funny, emotional, strong and confident. You will like this book if you 1) like Amy Schumer's comedy 2) want to learn more about Amy and 3) aren't offended by vulgar language or graphic visuals. I thoroughly enjoyed this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SO GOOD I would recommend this book even if you're not a Schumer fan. She gets real about a lot of stuff, and I guarantee you would have a new respect for her, especially the chapter on gun violence. So good!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love Amy Love Amy and it was a great first book cant wait for more content in the future. It was funny
Date published: 2017-05-23
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not a comedy but interesting Great background on the comedian. She really opens up and you learn a lot about her. I don't think the book is meant to be funny, rather truthful!
Date published: 2017-05-23
Rated 4 out of 5 by from love Amy! more serious than I thought it would be. good balance of comedy and seriousness.
Date published: 2017-05-19
Rated 4 out of 5 by from It's more than just jokes There are many stories that are touching and emotional, and the book ultimately focuses on her trying to mature (somewhat) and grow as a person. She brings humour to a terrible disease and writes a deeply touching tribute to the victims of gun violence. This is not a book centered on the world of comedy, but instead on her as a person. If you love who Amy is, you will love this book. The best stories are those of her trying to grow up in a semi-dysfunctional family from elaborate birthday parties to traumatic theme park outings.
Date published: 2017-05-17
Rated 4 out of 5 by from If you're a fan of Amy, you'll enjoy her book! I was laughing out loud at times, and cringing at others.
Date published: 2017-05-16
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was an okay read, pretty typical amy shumer Other biographies I've read have been better. She reuses a lot of the jokes in her stand up. Loved the gun violence touch. If you like her, it's still worth reading.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious Such a funny read, I already loved Amy but this book shows a different side of her and makes you love her more. The stories are not what you would expect based on her stand up. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another reason to lover Amy! I loved this book!! Amy Schumer is a great comedian, actor, and author.
Date published: 2017-05-11
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Insightful but not that humourous As many have pointed out there is a lot less of Amy the comedian here and a lot more of stories of a woman growing up and her (at times) horrible parents. I have read a lot of autobiographies of comedians and the ones that nailed it were Steve Martin and Tina fey who managed to tell their life stories but also focus on their growth as entertainers (which is what we really care about). Amy, unfortunately, has a book that reads more like a diary of a girl/woman growing up. Even when we get to the part where her career is working she focused on the shooting during one of the showings of her movie Trainspotting. The good part she has some interesting stories to tell and I love her point of view - but I would have preferred more talk about her comedy and the ups and downs of that industry. Or even a glimpse of what it was like putting on her TV show.
Date published: 2017-05-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unexpectedly deep So I like Amy Schumer's humour most of the time but I don't love it. This book was funny and most surprisingly, full of depth. There was raw emotion on the page as she talked about her dad's struggles with MS to troubled relationships that she has had in the past. Highly recommend even if you aren't a fan.
Date published: 2017-04-28
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not what I expected I thought it would be bit more comical since the author is a comedian. It was quite moving at parts thought because of the stories she shares about her family.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pleasant Surprise To be honest I didn't know much about Amy outside of her comedy specials. This was surprisingly wonderful to read. It seemed very raw and honest. I believe that if you had formed negative options about Amy based on her comedy routines to give this book a read because you will be exposed to a part of Amy that you do not see on the stage. I really enjoyed this read and recommend it to others to read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Highly recommend! I read this book without having seen any of Schumer's performances. I found the book to be hilarious and thoughtful. I was expecting to laugh, but I was so impressed by the depth of emotion as well (particularly when discussing her relationships with her parents). There were many times when I actually burst out laughing at her witty insights or ridiculous antics.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Glad it wasn't just pure comedy Still to this day, I rank Bossypants by Tina Fey to be the best comedic autobiography I've read. This wasn't quite at that level, but still a good read. I was really glad it wasn't purely comedy and that there were some serious issues/topics included as well.

Date published: 2017-03-18
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amy!! This book was amazing! I loved how Schumer's writing is the exact same as her comedic performances. The book captures her very essence...her stage self and non-stage self, as she discusses varying light and heavy, funny and serious issues. Amy's writing style is captivating and humorous, as well as enlightening and uplifting. I thoroughly enjoyed this read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Relatable I read this over Christmas break. Schumer's style is simple and relatable. She contrasts present day to her childhood and shows how she built her life. It was an easy and fun read.
Date published: 2017-03-06
Rated 5 out of 5 by from For all her fans SCHUMER is no writer, but she is on the other hand a phenomenal storyteller. SCHUMER proves that she is not just a loud, obnoxious, “female comedian” - she is a well rounded individual with a strong will and brave soul. SCHUMER lays it all out on the line going into extreme, excruciating detail about her personal struggles and what has lead to her becoming who she is today. No topic is off the table, and no filters applied (except valencia). Although SCHUMER’S content is more often than not unsavoury, In this surprising book, she graces us with some insight to the harder topics to discuss, the ones that jokes can’t touch. SCHUMER proves that she, like most people, are not one sided. She is made up of sides that conflict each other, that compliment each other, and that surprise each other. Amy is not just what she appears to be, and that is what makes this book special. Although at times her writing is choppy and her thoughts erratic, an in-depth portrait at what it is like to be Amy Schemer is painted. To all her “haters” - read her book, then you can make your judgements.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Love hate relationship with this book I really like a lot of the content in the book but I just didn't love it. It feels as if the stories, which some can be quite devastating, are told with a wall up. It is crazy to hear everything Amy has been through and power to her for doing so well, but I just didn't LOVE this book as much as I thought I would. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I thoroughly enjoyed this book! 4/5 - "The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo" by Amy Schumer This book was funny, serious, truthful and interesting in so many ways. Amy writes about her relationships, how she's an introvert and she tells her riches to rags to riches story. She gives the reader a glimpse into her childhood/young adult years (with great photos), writes about her relationship with her parents and her father's battle with multiple sclerosis. Some lighter stories are about her bat mitzvah and about her volunteering experiences at a camp for people with special needs. Throughout this book Amy provides many facts about herself such as how she lost her virginity (non consensual), her abusive relationships, what type of birth control she uses and how she knows sign language. She writes about her triumphs and failures as a comedian, her stance on gun violence and her tattoo.

Date published: 2017-02-14
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amy in the raw I understand how some people might feel disappointed, saying that the book "wasn't funny enough", but I don't think it was Amy's intention to write a book that had your crying with laughter from cover to cover. She tells us many stories about events that took place in her life and many of them are no laughing matter. That's what I loved about this book the most. It's raw. It shows the reader a side of Amy that you otherwise never would've have known. There's also a lot of vagina jokes so probably not the best if you're a prude.
Date published: 2017-02-12
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Feminism for the win! A feminist manifesto concealed in a comedy book. Still funny and super vulgar but also very women focused and poignant. 3/5
Date published: 2017-02-10
Rated 2 out of 5 by from I wish I liked it more... Key word being "wish"...sadly, 60 pages in, it is still pretty unfunny.
Date published: 2017-02-08
Rated 1 out of 5 by from unfunny Nope. Amy Shumer just doesn't do it for me at all. Tina Fey's book I loved. Schumer's is just not all that funny. Disappointing.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from I Expected More I am a huge fan of Amy's stand up and had high expectations for her book ... which were not met! I found her personality as a comedian did not translate well into this book. Started reading it but sadly couldn't get through it ...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! Hilarious, interesting and simply written. I loved reading this.
Date published: 2017-02-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really enjoyed this book! Mostly funny, but also serious at times (admittedly, I didn't enjoy these parts as much). Amy writes just as she would perform. Laugh-out-loud moments for sure. If you enjoy Amy's stand-up, you will enjoy her collection of stories in this book.
Date published: 2017-02-04
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Funny! Reading the other reviews, they say that this book is "not as funny as Amy's stand up". However, that is to be expected of a book, reading something can diffuse the humour. When you see a comedy show in person, the character of that person makes what they say funny. Reading this book with the voice in your head will not do this for you. I found this book remarkable, and witty. I am not a huge fan of celebrity books but I think that Amy is a wonderful person, and quite inspiring to many women.
Date published: 2017-02-02
Rated 4 out of 5 by from I really liked reading this book! Amy Schumer was so open, honest, and real in the stories she told about her life. She brought humour to both serious and fun subjects, and I laughed out loud more than a few times while reading.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not as funny as she can be I was hoping for more humor. The book showed that she's a good person and does good things for others. I was expecting more funny, dirty, entertaining stories. The book talks about her being an introvert and it shows in the book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Refreshing The book had a lot more depth than I expected and Amy really welcomed you into her life, her process, her struggles and her achievements. She was able to guide you through some of the challenges she has had to face, all the while keeping the tone light and her writing witty. I highly recommend the book for a refreshing take on the female comedian memoir.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilariously Entertaining! This book was a great buy! At times Amy is laugh-out-loud hilarious, and at others, she is full of depth and opens up about her challenging childhood. Great read. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious! I love Amy Schumer, I've always been a big fan. This book just made me love her more! I often found myself laughing out loud (for real) but other times close to tears. This book is powerful in so many ways & Amy is such a positive role model; I'd definitely recommend!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Such a great read! My friend and I always get the same book to read when travel together and this was the latest pick. I could not put it down. I was reading for hours as I walked the shore if siesta keys in Florida. I couldn't. It is raw and real, funny and serious but I love that she laid it all out there for us, so very openly. I would recommend this book for sure!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A Nice, Easy Read I bought this because I'm a fan of Amy Schumer. I really enjoyed getting to know more about my favourite comedian, including her dark struggles and funny moments in life. It's obviously not a hard read, good for a plane ride or on the beach.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious & Dark Let Amy lead you through her past and present, all the things she's worked for and all the things she aims to achieve.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Entertaining read Funny - per Schumer - but lacks the spontaneity of standup. Still good though.
Date published: 2017-01-15
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Don't bother? It was fine, but nothing sucked me in. Most of the humour was lost based on it being text and it didn't come across as witty or funny as I expected. Somewhat seemed like it was trying too hard, while at other times was bland and removed.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wonderful! Standing ovation for Amy Schumer! I went into this knowing absolutely nothing about her and came out holding her in such high regard. I would love to go back and give this to my teenage self, but I'll take it now too. She's a comedian, so of course it's funny, but it's so much more than that. These essays are touching, heartbreaking, smart and affirming. A celebration of being human, with all the flaws and wonders that come with it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good memoir, essay style book I could take or leave Amy Schumer but I do need to give her props for this novel. It is eye opening and hilarious, sad and disgusting all at once! I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I wasn't expecting this......... I am recommending this to every young women I know. I love how she admitted her flaws but that those flaws did not mean she was not worthy of love and respect. She spoke about how she had developed a healthy sense of self worth that still took hits once in a while and how she taught herself how to come back from those blows. Those are messages every person needs to hear and internalize. Amy spreads this message through telling stories from her life; funny, entertaining, sad, and poignant stories.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very funny, very real Amy opens up in the autobiography. There were moments when I thought 'ok, that's a little too much information..." BUT HEY, thats what she does on stage.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read! If you're in the mood for an easier yet interesting read, this is the book for you! While the book touches many darker topics such as gun laws and MS, Amy's book was still extremely funny. Definitely recommend!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from She's jokes SOMETIMES Amy Schumer is too much for me, but this book was a perfect balance between hilarious and oh.. I"m not really feeling this. I didn't like every anecdote/topic explored in this book but overall it was a good read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo Amy Schumer is just the BEST. If you’re not 100% sold on her raunchy brand of humor, read her book and prepare to be totally convinced of her awesomeness. If you thought her book would simply be a series of vag jokes, you thought wrong. What most impressed me: she can switch gears from funny to serious and back again with no lapse in momentum. A list of topics Amy covers in the book would be downright depressing: rape, terminal illness, bad parenting, domestic abuse, and gun violence are all on the menu, and she somehow covers everything in an uproarious way without ever making light of it. How?! Thus is the genius of Amy Schumer.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Light-hearted Read This isn't the type of book that you are going to read all in one night or week. I have read this book a chapter at a time every so often and love it. Amy did an excellent job allowing the readers to get to know her as well as her life. I find moments in this book very down to earth and funny.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Slow to start but keep going! I loved this book. And I love Amy Schumer. Her essays range from the treatment of women in mainstream magazines to her dad living with multiple sclerosis and everything in between (ya wanna read about what her vagina smells like, read on!). She's a rockstar in that she is unafraid to be herself: flawed, loving, funny, gross, active, pasta-lover, introverted. And her ability to be vulnerable (and real!) has allowed us to go a little more in that direction, too.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Another side to Amy This book was in my hands for three days. I really appreciated the look into Amy's life on a deeper level. It is still filled with jokes and her awesome humor, but you get an insight into her past, family, and career that I didn't see coming. It is more serious than funny, and I enjoyed every second.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Wonderful Light Read I love Amy's sense of humour, though wasn't sure what to expect in a book from her. I purchased it thinking that it would hopefully be a lighter, funnier read to get me back into reading as I had gotten away from this much loved hobby recently. I was pleased that my experience was just that. The stories were varied - heartfelt, humourous, expected and unexpected. I've also purchased it for, and recommended it to, various friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Casual Read Very down-to-earth and realistic comedy. Relatable experiences and hysterical scenarios make this book great for bringing on the bus or reading during your coffee break. Apart from being a comedic biography, it also pulls at the heart strings and challenges the reader to think and reflect. Overall, I very much enjoyed this book, each chapter was something new and interesting seen through the eyes of someone who deserves to be where she is today.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Disapoinnted I really wanted to like this book. I am not an Amy Schumer fan, but after seeing a really candid interview with her I though maybe her voice will speak louder in words. It didnt engage me the way I had expected compared to other comedians I've read such as Chelsea Handler or Ellen DeGeneres. I think Amy's comedy is most fun when its live and in person, not well translated through this book unfortunately.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hilarious Amy Schumer surprised me (in a good way), as The Girl with the Lower Back Tattoo was not at all what I was expecting. I was laughing out loud while reading this book, and even forced my husband to listen to parts as I read it aloud to him. I would recommend this book to anyone who has enjoyed Tina Fey or Amy Poehler, as I believe Amy Schumer's book to be far superior.

Editorial Reviews

“In line with its genius name, The Girl With the Lower Back Tattoo tackles the arduous task of explaining how Amy Schumer of Long Island became Amy Schumer of Vogue’s cover and internet think pieces, packed with the characteristic self-effacing humor and unfiltered raunch you crave.”
