about

Now a major motion picture from Lionsgate starring Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, and Naomi Watts.

MORE THAN SEVEN YEARS ON THE NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST
The perennially bestselling, extraordinary, one-of-a-kind, “nothing short of spectacular” (Entertainment Weekly) memoir from one of the world’s most gifted storytellers.

The Glass Castle is a remarkable memoir of resilience and redemption, and a revelatory look into a family at once deeply dysfunctional and uniquely vibrant. When sober, Jeannette’s brilliant and charismatic father captured his children’s imagination, teaching them physics, geology, and how to embrace life fearlessly. But when he drank, he was dishonest and destructive. Her mother was a free spirit who abhorred the idea of domesticity and didn’t want the responsibility of raising a family.

The Walls children learned to take care of themselves. They fed, clothed, and protected one another, and eventually found their way to New York. Their parents followed them, choosing to be homeless even as their children prospered.

The Glass Castle is truly astonishing—a memoir permeated by the intense love of a peculiar but loyal family.

Heather's Review

When Jeannette Walls’ father was sober, he was the best dad a kid could ask for, wild and inspiring. But when he was drunk, he would steal, lie, and abandon his family for days at a time. Jeannette’s mom hated the idea of domesticity and motherhood, and from an incredibly young age, Jeannette and her siblings were forced to take care...

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Incredible, but not gripping The writing in the book is absolutely beautiful and raw, however it did not suck me into the story and I found it easy to put down. It was a heartbreaking story of a very dysfunctional family that I believe everyone should read, as it is so eye opening.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Truthful Beyond the Love and Pain of Dysfunction I have read other stories and books about dysfunctional families. Where this one differs is that the author writes of the love; the laughs and the creativity as well as the pain and humiliation. There is little if any self-pity or bitterness. This is an excellent biography written by an excellent human being!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Jeannette Walls is a great storyteller. I always admire autobiographical authors for how they can recount their lives in such detail. The Walls family never had it easy. With a drunk for a father and a mother hellbent on adventure, the Walls children learned to fend for themselves. It was admirable how much the kids stood up to their family and how they were able to take matters into their own hands. Even though their lives were tough, they also shared some very special moments with each other.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great book I loved this book a lot. It was a sad read but it goes to show that no matter the circumstances of your life, it's up to YOU to make a difference, and work towards the life you want. Only you can change your circumstances, and that's one moral that really resonated with me while reading this. I highly recommend!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favourite Book This book showed me that everyone has a messed up life and that you are not alone! I think high school students need to read this book to gain some perspective on what they are going through and to be able to relate to people in their classes that maybe they wouldn't normally give the time of day to. This is a book I will reread over and over again. It was absolutely amazing!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Book I had to write a book review on an autobiography in grade 11 and my teacher suggested this book along with others. I was very pleased that I chose it as it was a fascinating view into a type of lifestyle vastly different from the one I had experienced growing up. I have since bought the book and now it sits on my shelf with the rest of my favorites! Jeannette Walls tells it how it was and her stories will grip you till you've read the final word.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An eye opener I bought The Glass Castle as it peaked my interest as a book to read. I could not believe how someone could raise their children in such surroundings and yet was amazed at how the children survived. I found it truly amazing how the children accepted their lifestyle and finally found the courage to stand up to their parents towards the end.. In some ways, it was valuable lessons of strength and faith that allowed the children to leave and embark on a life of their own while still wanting to help their parents even though they did not want any help at all.
Date published: 2017-08-31
Rated 4 out of 5 by from An incredible tale of resilience and family bonds At times, The Glass Castle is a heavy read, but the sheer resilience of the Walls children is so profoundly moving that I couldn't bring myself to put the book down. Jeannette Walls weaves a captivating account of her life from childhood to adulthood, growing up in poverty to free-wheeling and reckless parents who moved her and her three siblings around the country to avoid bill collectors. It's a heartbreaking story, but Walls finds a way to brilliantly convey the great internal struggle that is remaining loyal to loved whiles while holding them accountable for their actions. A magnificent read - I only wish there was more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from lux: oblivion This was a great book that I did not know I needed. At first, I was not sure if I should read it, thinking it is a classical ''write exactly the same thing but the pronoun change'' but it was not the case. It added so much to the story, telling us things that we missed, and adding another aspect of the event that are necessary to understand better the character decison. It was well written, and even in the scene that were in the other books, you have the feeling to read a new story

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't put it down I read this years ago, and it's still one of my favourite books. As I read it I was in disbelief that the events actually happened in Jeannette Walls' life! I really look forward to how they bring it to life in the movie.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reminder to all The Glass Castle is truly the kind of book that appears almost out of the blue but stays in our hearts forever. Written with passion and care, we are allowed to live through Jeanette's childhood as she deals with her alcoholic father who she can't help but stand by, and the rest of her dysfunctional family. The true charm in this novel lies within Jeanette's impeccable ability to recount memories of her parents and siblings and the tribulations that they face, whether it be protecting each other from gropers or running from the police. This story is a one way ticket to a normal day in the lives of the Walls family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my favourite books ever I read this book several years ago. I read it in a day because I couldn't put it down. An incredible story and the writing style really put some incredible pictures in my mind. I found myself looking for Little Hobart Street on google maps to compare it with the pictures in my mind. I've recommended the book to friends and they too couldn't put it down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from shocked and amazed I just got this thru chapters the other day and I have read half of it basically in one sitting. I have wanted to read it for years but kept putting it off. Now they are making a movie of this woman's story. It's so well written, so full of bare faced truth and yet there is a shocking and often appalling way the parents raised their children. They took personal freedom to a whole new level and yet obviously it shaped who the children are today. I would HIGHLY recommend this to anyone who wants a truthful, gritty, absorbing read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Considering a re-read I read this book a few years ago and I don't find it all that memorable. It was good, and I remember liking it, but I don't understand all the hype. I would consider giving it another try.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Heather's Pick When Jeannette Walls’ father was sober, he was the best dad a kid could ask for, wild and inspiring. But when he was drunk, he would steal, lie, and abandon his family for days at a time. Jeannette’s mom hated the idea of domesticity and motherhood, and from an incredibly young age, Jeannette and her siblings were forced to take care of themselves. Wall’s powerful memoir of her unique family story has been one of my favourite biographies for over a decade, and I am so pleased to hear that the upcoming movie is already garnering Oscar buzz. I’m excited to reintroduce this book to a whole new generation of readers who will discover this stirring tale of personal strength and the inescapable ties of family.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Possibly one of my favourite reads ever My mother in law original recommended this to me several years ago and I don't think I've read anything since that has resonated with me so much. Reading about Jeanette's childhood is almost hard to believe and yet there are moments that feel familiar and parallel. This truly was an all emotions in, laugh, cry and shake your head book. I've given it as gifts, I've reread it myself and even repurchased it when my copy was lent out and never returned. When life gets tough and I feel I can't scratch to nickles together, I often think about The Glass Castle.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Unforgettable! One of my favourite books! The book is very well written and the unbelievable stories the author endured throughout her childhood makes you wonder how they all survived. It is obvious Jeannette Walls is a stronger person for what she went through and I'm glad she felt the strength to share her story with others. The book will stay with you long after you have finished.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very great memoir! It was my first time reading a memoir and I have to say I was cut off-guard; I really enjoyed it. I've learned a lot of useful and great lessons while reading this book. It made me look at life with new eyes and somehow, lowered some standards. If you read this, you will get to see how The Walls are a creative, charming, intelligent, and unique family of their own. They really worked hard.
