Welcome to the fabled Gold Coast, that stretch on the North Shore of Long Island that once held the greatest concentration of wealth and power in America. Here two men are destined for an explosive collision: John Sutter, Wall Street lawyer, holding fast to a fading aristocratic legacy; and Frank Bellarosa, the Mafia don who seizes his piece of the staid and unprepared Gold Coast like a latter-day barbarian chief and draws Sutter and his regally beautiful wife, Susan, into his violent world. Told from Sutter's sardonic and often hilarious point of view, and laced with sexual passion and suspense, The Gold Coast is Nelson DeMille's captivating story of friendship and seduction, love and betrayal.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I ruined this by mistake. I had heard that DeMille was writing a sequel to this book a couple of months ago, and recently decided to pick up this tome in anticipation of the next in the series. About halfway through this enjoyable read, I read a newspaper review of the new book, and instantly had the ending of the Gold Coast spoiled. Nonetheless, I continued reading, and still found myself engrossed in the rich characterization and interesting plot. The ending, spoiled as it was, still provided some surprises, and I will certainly read the Gatehouse, Demille's follow up to this work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolute Classic The Gold Coast by Nelson Demille is one of the best books I have ever read, which is ironic since I avoided it for years. I had heard that it was not a typical Demille book and that it had received mixed reviews as a result. I agree that it's not similar to any of his other books, but it is still a witty, action filled story with clever and creative characters. This book inspired me to objectively take inventory of my own life and break it down to a simple level: what makes me happy and what is stopping me from pursuing that. I will definitely be reading this novel again.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Survival of the Fittest If you can survive the first 300 pages of virtual monotony, you'll be happy you did as the last 300 pages are much more entertaining. The story wasn't terribly brilliant, but characters are neurotic enough to keep your attention. This novel was passable, but not nearly the page turner of DeMille's General's Daughter .
