Recently divorced, Anna Dunlap has two passionate attachments: her daughter, four-year-old Molly, and her lover, Leo, the man who makes her feel beautiful -- and sexual -- for the first time. Swept away by happiness and passion, Anna feels she has everything she's ever wanted.

Then come the shocking charges that would threaten her new love, her new "family" ... that force her to prove she is a good mother.

Sue Miller is the bestselling author of While I Was Gone, The Distinguished Guest, For Love, Family Pictures, Inventing the Abbotts, and The Good Mother. She lives in Cambridge, Massachusetts.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Complex and good plot I found all the characters unlikable. Each one is stupid in their own unique way. I found myself unable to identify with Anna with each mistake she makes. Anna's character started irritating me. The incident where she left her daughter alone for 20 min, I was appalled. Then Anna's behaviour with Leo was equally shocking to me. To me, she seemed like a sulky child all through the story. It felt like she was living in a dream. Though Anna's behaviour was inappropriate throughout the book, she was indeed a mother. With all her faults she proved herself likeable in the end. This novel really explores all the ways that we may define what a "good mother is. The main character Anna struggles with this throughout her life and through the events surrounding this book. I particularly liked the descriptions of her childhood summers at her grandparent's camp and the relationship with her family.
