The Great Impersonation by E. Phillips Oppenheim is one of the fiction best sellers in 1920. An evil arms manufacturor Leopold von Ragastein meets his doppelganger Sir Everard Dominey in Africa and in league with his associates plans to murder him and take his place in British society. However, doubts soon begin to arise that the man who returns to England may in fact be the real Dominey.
The novel has been adapted for film three times, all American. A 1921 silent film version The Great Impersonation directed by George Melford and two sound films, The Great Impersonation (1935) directed by Alan Crosland and The Great Impersonation (1942) directed by John Rawlins.
