With the outbreak of war in the former Yugoslavia in 1991, interest in Balkan history has increased and become emotionally charged. This balanced and engagingly written history of Serbia will help readers to understand the complex web of Serbian history, politics, society, and culture and how the Serbs have dealt with the many political, military, and socioeconomic challenges in their history. It attempts to remove the veil of stereotypes and myths obscuring the significant details and developmental processes in the history of Serbia and in its relations with its neighbors. In addition to examining the political history of Serbia in the context of Central Europe, the author, a specialist in Balkan history, shows how societal and cultural developments affected Serbian history and reflected political and economic events. A timeline of significant events in the history of Serbia and an introductory chapter on Serbia today are followed by 12 chronologically organized narrative chapters that tell the story of this land from the splendor of medieval Serbia to a new beginning after the downfall of Slobodan Milosevic. Four historical maps, brief biographies of key figures in Serbian history, a glossary of terms, and a bibliographic essay provide valuable resource material for readers. Every library should update its collection of materials on Serbia with this current history.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply Outstanding! The History of Serbia book is very interesting to read because it has a lot of facts about the once great communist country and the political and bloody downfall. It is interesting to know how the author talks about the Josip Broz Tito era and how he managed to put together six republics and made them into one united communist nation with each republic speaking the same language which was Serbo-Croatian. Also from the early days when Turkey had ruled Serbia for over five-hundred years, to causing the first World War that lasted four years and being involved in the second World War that lasted almost five years. Also in 1990, when the old Yugoslavia started to fall apart with the other five republics declaring their independence which led to the civil war within the country that had left hundreds of thousands of people being killed in any way possible. I also found it interesting when the author was describing how the Serbs used to kill the Albanians in Kosovo, the led to the United States and NATO going to war against Serbia in attempt to stop the killings that have ravaged Serbia's most southern province of Kosovo. This great book highlights the outstanding achievements and the sports world not only as former Yugoslavia, but also as Serbia. To sum up this wonderful book about the wars that Serbia has been through and the country's sports achievements, I suggest purchasing and reading the book because you will be amazed to know on how Serbia's history has unfolded.
