Rated 5 out of 5 by from Everyone needs a Hobbit adventure I loved this book! I had been meaning to read it for years and never got to it. I think what I loved most, is that it was narrated in a way that made me feel as though someone was telling me a story. It just had a different feel to it. I will admit though, the movie had a lot more to it and I found there was a lot in the movie(s) I missed out on in the book. This book definitely has a lot more singing in it though! Who knew elves, dwarves and goblins were so musical? I still believe it is a full 5 star read though and am looking forward to continuing the series

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SHOULD BE ON EVERYONE'S READING LIST Just finished rereading. I initially did things backwards and read the "Lord of the Rings" trilogy first. Culture shock. The LOTRs series is a heavier read. There's a lightness and gaiety to "The Hobbit" no matter what trials the band of adventurers face. I loved the movies. Big fan of Martin Freeman. Read this book - you will not regret it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I Loved It! I tried the LotR books when the movies had come out and found them to not be my cup of tea. I figured The Hobbit would also be that way. I am so happy I gave it a chance, I found it so hard to put down. WAY better than the movies, which previous to reading the book I thought were rather good. Can't wait to share this book with my kids.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Obviously a Great Book Truth Bomb: It took for years for me to actually read "The Hobbit" in full. I know. I am sorry. It doesn't help that I am a die-hard fan of "The Lord of the Rings" (reviews on those to come if you care). I must have started this book at least 8-10 times before I actually fully read it. I would start to read it, put it down, pick it up years later, find my old place, realize I don't remember the characters, and have to start all over again. Now that I have read the book cover to cover and did not take breaks, I have to say that I was an idiot to not just stick with it when I first started reading. The story is fantastic, the chapters are nicely divided so it is like all of these neat mini adventures are happening within the process of completing an even bigger adventure (which is true), and the world is so well developed. Tolkien is one of my favourite fantasy authors (I know, I am very original) because he knows how much he needs to say and can communicate with his audience fluidly. He doesn't tell us the full history of Thorin and his ancestors because (as he said) that is not the story we are focusing on. Of course you can always go and find that story in many of his other works including some of the histories his son has helped published since Tolkien's passing. If you want the detail, you can go find the detail, but if you just want to focus on the story of Bilbo Baggins, then that is what Tolkien will give you. The book is also very user friendly and Tolkien has included maps to help us understand the landmarks and where they fall in relation to one another. This prevents you from hunting through chapters to figure out where Mirkwood is exactly or trying to remember if the Lonely Mountain is part of the Misty Mountains (it's not). And the maps themselves are beautiful and tell their own stories. I personally own all of the maps (Middle Earth, the Shire, Thorin's Map) and am only missing the one that has a more detailed look at Mirkwood (if someone knows where I can get one of these, let me know. But this is a Chapters review so you probably stopped reading after the title. Good for you if you made it this far. Thank you for reading my randomness. Anyways...). It is clear Tolkien knows how to write a great book that can draw people in multiple times. Even though I have "read" this book 8-10 times, I always enjoyed reading it again. I never felt that passages were boring or that since I had read it before, I could skip it. I always found new things to ponder on and make connections with. That is the work of a great book: a story that can give you something new no matter how much time you spend with it. Fun Fact (as mentioned in the Forward of my version of this book): The first line of the book "In a hole in the ground there lived a hobbit." was said to have been written by Tolkien years before he even started developing the book. He simply thought of it one day and wrote it down on a piece of paper, then left it at that for a while. He didn't know what a hobbit was and through telling stories to his sons, he was about to flesh out the creature. It took time for him to create this world and write all of these amazing books. I think we should all take our time reading them and truly appreciate the work that he has done. It takes me maybe 2-3 days to read a book of this size. I read "The Hobbit" in 8 days. Not because it was a hard read, but because I immersed myself within the world. It was totally worth it. So pick up a copy of "The Hobbit" today and see how such a small creature can make a giant difference. Next up on my reading list: "The Lord of the Rings" (each section will be reviewed individually).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wow I recently decided to read 'The Hobbit' because a friend of mine loves this book, even though I've seen the movies. And I can't tell you enough how shocked I was at the style the author used to write this book! Not to mention how a few changed details that were incorporated into the movie completely neglect some of the true insights of this book. If you're looking for a down-to-earth traditional adventure in a storytelling voice, make sure to pick up this book! I was pleasantly surprised!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Don't know I tried this book after I tried Lord of the Rings. I guess this is the wrong order. anyways I'm just not sure. I didn't finish it. Everything seems so abstract. I guess I'm not into fantasy. i guess its good for fantasy lovers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The book that started it all The book that started it all! I remember in 5th grade my teacher reading this to our class. I remember my imagination taking my away to places Bilbo went or what his house looked like or even trying to imagine Gandalf and his dwarfs could possible look like! Great read and in my opinion a classic!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Amazing! I was forced to read this book for school and was surprised to find that I actually enjoyed it. It has the perfect balance between action, adventure, and fantasy. It also doesn't have an overload of explanations like Lord of the Rings. Another bonus for me was that I really enjoyed analyzing the story and writing my essay paper!

Rated 2 out of 5 by from it was alright Normally fantasy books are right up my alley. I found this book long and difficult to get through. Rated 3 out of 5 by from Charming Tale There is a glorious nostalgia and wonderment here that I can't quite grasp. Perhaps it's because I waited until I was an adult to read The Hobbit, or maybe it's because I don't like long-winded stories. Whatever it is, it has prevented me from falling in love with this book like so many before me have. That's not to say I don't absolutely appreciate this book and think that it's a wonderful piece of work - I do. I just feel like I'm on the outside looking in, and it makes me a bit sad. I have to say it's a charming tale, with characters that really worm their way into your heart. However I found the way the story was told was a bit boring at times, and I often felt that I was reading it so that it would be finished, rather than because I was really enjoying it. But anyway, I'm glad I read it. It's a lovely story and I can see why it's become such a beloved classic.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Book This is one masterfully written book that has a wide age range, for young and old. Once again J. R. R. Tolkien spellbinds his audience with the amazing book about a hobbit who never dreams of adventures, but than in come a wizard, and before he knows it, he's off to trying to reclaim the thirteen dwarves homeland, Erebore, that was stolen from them by the evil dragon Smaug. Experience the epic tale of a battle between good and evil, beautiful prologue to the bestselling Lord of the Rings trilogy. There is so much to say about this book, in so little of space. Yes I definitely recommend this product. There are so many ways of looking at this book, and the reason that I think Tolkien wrote these books at all was because he wanted to send a message out to the world that even the tiniest of fellows (figuratively and literally) can make the biggest impression on the world, and possibly even save it. This is just one way of looking at it. I hope you like this book as much as I did and continue to do so as I read it over and over. I do nit regret a thing about reading this.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A classic for young and old The Hobbit is a wonderful tale overall. The beginning is a bit slow, and there are lulls in the story throughout, but if you can make it to the end, it's one that you are likely not to forget any time soon.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay I have to say this was not the most interesting book. I started it, then dropped it. I decided to read it again and actually finish it. The beginning and most of the book to be honest was boring so I had to force myself to finish it. Some parts however was interesting and I actually enjoyed. If you're into books like Lord of the Rings, etc. I would recommend. Personally I wouldn't recommend this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic! Even if you did not like any of the other Lord of the Rings books, I would recommend this one. It is fantasy at it's best and is a delightful prologue to the series. It has a different feel from the rest of the stories because it starts in an earlier, different timeline. I definitely love this treasure hunt!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from not for everyone I read this book a while ago. I enjoyed it, although i found the start of it a little slow and sort of boring. It took me a while to finish this book because i found it hard to start, and hard to get into. once I got into I found it interesting. It also took me a while to finish reading it because some parts in the middle were a little less intriguing than i hoped so i sort of lost interest. over all i enjoyed it but i wouldn't say its on my favourit's list. #plumreview

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not for me I did not enjoy this book at all. I had to force myself to finish it. The movies, in my opinion, were much better, and I rarely come to that conclusion.
Date published: 2017-02-23
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Adored it I agree that not everyone would love this book. I am a 20 year old female and adored it though. This story was originally written as a story book for the author's kids so it was really written as a large fairy tale full of adventure and thrills. To me, I read the book and the author made the reader dive into a world of magic, elves, goblins and dragons. I enjoyed it immensely as an adult, and I definitely plan on reading this to my kids one day as an ongoing bedtime story.
Date published: 2017-02-21
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Not for everyone I thought I'd love this story, but it turned out to be quite boring -- even though I'm a fast reader, I was stuck with this book for over a month. I must admit that Tolkien is a great storyteller, but the pace of this book is not for everyone... way too many descriptions, way too much singing, way too much telling instead of showing. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome In a word, this book is awesome - in the literal sense! It is well written, and the story is intriguing. I loved watching the development of Bilbo's character, and how quickly you become attached to the characters. For those who have watched the movie, the movies are accurate to an extent, but reading the book is definitely worth the time!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing! I honestly saw the movie trailers all the time (and even own a LOTR movie at home) but have never been interested in it. But when it came time to chose a novel for a project in grade 12 I was at a loss. I had to chose any novel that was award-winning and by an award-winning author so I asked my school librarian for help! She recommended this and a few others and I chose this one. This book was so great! I am planning to read the other books too.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderful story, hard to get into J.R.R Tolkien has a very unique way of writing that some readers may find hard to become interested in. However, once the story really gets started, it's absolutely captivating

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Beautiful! Tolkien has always been my favorite author and The Hobbit was my first read by him. I first read this book when I was ten and now I reread it at least once a year. 20 pages in and you're already on the classic adventure to slay a dragon and regain a lost treasure. Would recommend this to anyone, young or old!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A classic fantasy tale I read this book for the first time 30 years ago, and I think I've read it 30 times since. There's lots of adventure, but also a certain amount of whimsy from a narrator with a sense of humor. A great book for adults and kids alike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Tolkien Starter Book My review pertains to the edition with the ISBN of 9780007458424. This paperback edition is great for starting someone Tolkien, be it yourself or someone you're buying for. It's paperback, but of decent quality. The cover art is quite sharp, and the chapter illustrations are lovely as well. Should you (or person you're buying for) wish to get additional Tolkien titles, most paperback editions should line up well with this one on the shelf.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Classic While not as grand as LOTR, I enjoyed reading this more. It started as a bedtime story for his kids, and I look forward to reading it my kids as a bed time story as soon as they get a little older. This maybe the perfect book.
