L a Salle descended the Missis-i Sippi to its m o u t h in 1682, took possession of its west ern valley in the name of Louis XIV. And, with a T e D e u m of p r ai S e named it Louisiana, rafter his king. So it continued for eighty years, when, in 1762, it was ceded by France to Spain. Both nations found Louisi ana a troublesome and expensive colony. France alone had squan dered many thousands of dollars in fruitless attempts at colonization. Spain held possession for the next thirty-eight years, and was glad to re-cede the territory to France in 1800.
