The library on the first floor: a large, lofty room, lighted by four undraped windows with small, greenish panes. At the back, between two high doors, on the whitewashed wall, a large wooden cross with a rude, bronze crucifix, which shows signs of mutilation. At the other end, above SYGNE'S head, on the remnant of a cool-coloured silk tapestry, in which is an ornament of entwined foliage in the middle of a tattered pastoral scene, is woven the Coufontaine coat of arms: or on a chief gules (two clasped hands), azure on the point with a sword of argent on a pale between Sun and Moon, and for battle cry and motto: Coufontaine, adsum! The floor, which is extremely clean, is of wide plank studded with irregular rows of large shining nails. SYGNE is sitting in a corner at a charming little cabinet completely covered with account books and neatly arranged bundles of papers. Farther back is a small table on which are bread and wine and other things. Large, formal pieces of furniture, chairs and arm-chairs stand in a line down the whole length of the room, which has an austere and deserted appearance. A screen on which prunes are drying stands on the floor. This is not all visible when the curtain goes up. It is night; the inside shutters are closed.
