When Admiral Roland Nelson Whittington visited the East Coast of Scotlabd, for the first time, he liked what he saw. As he intended to marry in the near future, he needed a good country House, to settle in, so with  his architect, he designed and built the Laurels, after the Adam style. It was here, to this imposing house, in the 1860's that he brought his young bride, and their only child, a son, James Nelson Whittington, was born here, in the Laurels. James followed his father into  The Royal Navy, and when World War 1 enveloped Europe, and the then young Admiral prepared to go to war, he met  the lovely Miss Florence West, at a New Year party, at the house of an Edinburgh friend. Crossing the Bay of Biscay, on a dark and stormy night, disaster struck, when his ship was besieged by force 9 gales, and a section of the ship's rigging srtuck him, fatally. His bereaved wife and his 10-year-old daughter, Augusta, were left behind, alone at the Laurels, and his widow was to die of a broken heart, too soon, leaving Augusta to face World War 11 alone. Augusta met the man she would love to her dying day, on the banks of the Firth of Forth, but war is cruel, there are no winners, and Augusta waited, and waited, and when he returned, war had also cheated the lovers, to death.
