about

The "wisest and most captivating novel" (Boston Globe) from the author of the bestselling The Valley of Amazement and the new memoir Where the Past Begins

Set in San Francisco and in a remote village of Southwestern China, Amy Tan's The Hundred Secret Senses is a tale of American assumptions shaken by Chinese ghosts and broadened with hope. In 1962, five-year-old Olivia meets the half-sister she never knew existed, eighteen-year-old Kwan from China, who sees ghosts with her "yin eyes." Decades later, Olivia describes her complicated relationship with her sister and her failing marriage, as Kwan reveals her story, sweeping the reader into the splendor and violence of mid-nineteenth century China. Rated 5 out of 5 by from LOVE Amy Tan People are always say that Amy Tan is woman's literature. First off, I have to say that I don't really think that there is such a thing as woman's or men's lit and saying so only forces people in both of those categories to miss out on some really great literature. This book is worth reading!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A treasure Whatever your religious view, the world beyond death is a constant source of fascination and curiosity for us mortals. I by chance picked up "The Hundred Secret Senses" from a friend's bookshelf and read of the World of Yin (a Chinese traditional view of the world of people that passed away), being told in a beautiful story with extremely lovable and memorable characters. I am especially fond of the character Kwan, the "Yin people seeing" sister of the narrator, she taught me love and loyalty, the simplicity of faith and hope. This book is a treasure.
