about

Now in paperback, the book no one can stop talking about . . .

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the other districts in line by forcing them to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight-to-the-death on live TV.

One boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and sixteen are selected by lottery to play. The winner brings riches and favor tohis or her district. But that is nothing compared to what the Capitol wins: one more year of fearful compliance with its rule. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her impoverished district in the Games.

But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hooked me right away! As a Middle School English teacher, I don't end up with much time to read after planning lessons and marking papers. So many of my students were reading this or had read it that I figured I needed to too! Well it hooked me from the beginning and I had to read the whole series. Now to see the movies!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely loved this! Fantastic! I don't normally read YA and I absolutely loved this book - the story line, the characters, all of it. And I read this well in advance of the movies, so no bias there. Would definitely recommend the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ONE OF THE MOST AMAZING SERIES EVER! I can't even describe what I felt after finishing the first book in this series. This is the kind of book that remains with you long after you've read it and the characters stay in your mind as well. Such a well written and truly horrifying dystopia. I LOVED IT!! MUST READ

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Suspenseful Novel! I read this book a few months ago and it was definitely worth my time. The Hunger Games is a great novel for anyone who is looking for a book with a strong female lead. I would recommend this book to both family and friends!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting The Hunger Games is a great trilogy that is set in a dystopic city of Panem; although it's a bit boring in the first chapter, you will not be able to put it down after the Reaping.
Date published: 2018-06-24
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pacing Issues This was a fun read, kind of boring for the first half, but once the Hunger Games actually begin, things heat up a bit.
Date published: 2018-06-20
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Had Potential I was expecting more. I had to read this in English class believe or not, but maybe my teacher hyped it up too much. All Katniss did in the Hunger Games was hide and wait for everyone to die until the very end when her hand was forced. I feel like there is so much potential with this idea, but it's barred down by its teen audience. I was just hoping for more, give me a Hunger Games with an actual competitor, not a camper who waits for the right time to strike. It's still a good book, but the content should have been more R-rated than PG-13, considering what the Hunger Games is all about, a fight for survival until the last man/woman stands.
Date published: 2018-06-19
Rated 5 out of 5 by from CLASSIC its one of those books that is just a perfect blend of sci fi and action. Its really hard to get right but i think she did an amazing job.
Date published: 2018-06-19
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Best YA Dystopian What can I possibly say about The Hunger Games that hasn't already been said? I know a lot of people compare this series to Battle Royale but even Battle Royale isn't the first book about a bunch of kids killing each other. People have to stop using that argument. This is a rare book where I actually liked the love triangle and understood why Katniss was conflicted. Peeta was the guy she had to love for the cameras and as their experiences in The Hungers Games continued, she found herself caring for him more. And with Gale, she always saw him as a friend but then she appreciated him more after her life-threatening matches. She didn't know how to feel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A great book A different type of book with a lot of emotion and adventure
Date published: 2018-06-03
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent I thought the book was decent, this was the first dystopian book I have ever read so I found it different. I did not hate it but I also did not like it, I just was not a fan of the premise. I would not read it again but I do feel it is a book you should try to read. I did like Suzanne Collins' writing, she did a good job with adding deep meaning and messages with her choice of words. With some stories I find authors attempts at deep and meaningful messages with words are too forced and obvious, and I find Suzanne Collins succeeded in avoiding being lumped in with those authors.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic! I picked up this book 8 years ago and I still enjoy reading it! Such a compelling, original idea for a novel, completed with charming characters. Highly recommend. Once you pick it up you won't be able to put it down!
Date published: 2018-05-27
Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must-Read One of the more classic dystopian books that got released. If you haven't read this book you really should!
Date published: 2018-05-22
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Captivating and Entertaining While the thing that made this series so popular is the plot, what I liked most about it is the writing style. It is very straight forward narration, which goes extremely well with the main character's personality. I'm not arguing that it's the best writing in the world, just that I find its simplicity stands out in a pleasant way.
Date published: 2018-05-17
Rated 5 out of 5 by from An intense, thrilling adventure. A great young adult novel with a plot that keeps it shooting forward. It will leave you happy to be along for the ride and ecstatic not to be living in District 11.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Original. An original concept with a very interesting main character. Kind of a cop out at the end but it needed to happen.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Pretty good I read this book when it first came out, it was actually assigned as the novel study for my 8th grade class. I found it a bit slow at the beginning but it gradually got very interesting. I would definitely recommend it, especially if you can push through the somewhat boring parts. However, if you can't, then just watch the movie, it also had some slow areas but it's much easier to watch them than read them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my all time favourites Oh goodness, I had such a blast re-reading one of my favourite books of all time. No matter how many I read the Hunger Games, I always find my heart beating a mile a minute as I struggle to read the pages fast enough. Katniss, her strength is something all readers envy. She never gives up, no matter the circumstances. Something I really admire about her character. She will do anything to protect the people she loves. And sweet, sweet Prim. She tore at my heart strings during the reaping. The love I felt through the first few chapters made me melt. That’s what true family is. Sacrificing yourself for your family is one of the bravest things anyone could do, if put in that position. Peeta is my second favourite character after Katniss. He’s a sweetheart and honest. His unyielding love for Katniss was so apparent, and it made my heart melt into a million pieces. Gale had some pretty thoughtful ideas about the Capital and how he viewed the world in the first few chapters. Apart from that we didn’t get to see him much in this book. I know that’s probably gonna change, but FYI I’m team Peeta all the way! Katniss and Peeta <3. I fell in love with their chemistry and banter. I could really feel the emotions floating off the page when Peeta would talk to Katniss. However the girl on fire was harder to figure out. It was easier for her to hide her feelings. I hope they end up together omg. Never a dull moment no matter how many times I read this book my heart can help but race in anticipation of what I know is to come. 24 people from ages 12 to 18 are forced into an arena and fight to the death until only 1 person remains. The games were created to keep the villages in line so that no uprise or rebellion would happen again. It’s gory, action-packed, and every scene messes with your mind. Enjoy the amazing adventure that you will never forget. I’m gonna be moving on to the second book in the trilogy, Catching Fire, very soon. 5 Stars for one of my forever favs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Couldn't Put it Down! I read this book years ago and someone made a reference about it, that made me pick it up to re-read. Suffice to say, it read all evening and night to finish it. It really grabs you from the start and holds you in. Yes, it's depressing but there are little jewels of hope sprinkled into this dytopian world.
Date published: 2018-03-07
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mind-blowing My favourite dystopian book! While there are many dystopian fantasies out there, this one remains a classic and for good reason. Suzanne Collins shows us a terrifying world and a strong female protagonist with eloquent writing that keeps us on the edge of our seats.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good I had heard so much about this series that maybe when I finally read it, it just didn't live up to my expectations. It's still a very good book but I just didn't find the characters all too deep and the whole of it wasn't amazing compared with other stories I have read in the past. Still a very good book though.
Date published: 2018-03-01
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good Read This is a really good read that deals with a lot of heavy themes (in general, not just for a teenage novel). It's absolutely worth the read.

Date published: 2018-01-24
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's overrated It's a good book, but I find it a little overrated. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. If you're trying to find a book to pass time with some easy philosophy lesson, go for it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compelling story I didn't like Katniss but that's a positive for me because I like stories where the author doesn't focus on making the character likable but true to oneself. I appreciated reading this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best series opener ever Such a classic novel that changed the young adult fiction world forever, not to mention the mass of wanna-be dystopians that never quite lived up to the brilliancy of this book.
Date published: 2018-01-12
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nostalgic I remember reading this book back in 2011. It was my first young adult book, and I was absolutely OBSESSED with this series back then. The Hunger Games will always be a favorite of mine, as it introduced me to several other books that have greatly impacted my life.
Date published: 2018-01-10
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good This book was good, and so was the movie. I feel like the movie did a pretty good job at lining up with the book. The collection is worth a read for people into this style of book.
Date published: 2018-01-08
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Favourite This is still my favourite book out of the trilogy, just so much intensity and originality in the story.
Date published: 2018-01-06
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great characters The ending was very anti-climactic, and I have a headache at the thought that I have to read 2 more books to find out what happens. I knew it was a trilogy but I still expected this book to be more self contained. And the first-person present-tense narrative was extremely distracting. Maybe I'm just not used to it. But I was hooked before the end, the suspense was kept up well and the characters were extremely appealing. I will finish the series for the characters alone. I expect them to be very different from this one, since this was set pretty much entirely in the arena. I have no idea how they will compare, so we shall see.
Date published: 2018-01-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must-read!!!! Everybody should read this series at least once, truly captivating in every sense of the word!
Date published: 2017-12-31
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great read. Read this book years ago after watching the movie. I prefer the novel over the film, but the film was a decent interpretation.
Date published: 2017-12-28
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lots of layers The premise is a bit silly, and the comparison is often drawn to other media such as Battle Royale. But where The Hunger Games shines is in its social commentary. Some of it is over-the-top, like the authoritarian government stuff. But then there's all the subtler stuff about race and class and trauma that give the book a lot of depth. Beyond that, many of the characters are just downright interesting.
Date published: 2017-12-23

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Book It's a really good book and I recommend it to a younger age not so much people in their twenties. It was fun reading when I was younger though! Not so much anymore.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thought provoking and heart pounding This was one of the very first books I bought for myself. I could not put it down and finished it in a day. All of the characters and the country of Panem were so thoughtfully constructed by Suzanne Collins. Katniss Everdeen is a compelling protagonist. Her goal of survival and her desire to do the right thing are completely at odds due to the nature of the tremendously unequal society she lives in. My heart was pounding every second that she was in that arena, and I kept wondering what could possibly lead a human population to the point where it forces its children to fight to the death for food?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great book... If you're a thirteen year old. Sure, rereading it when you're 17 is cool too, but it doesn't have the same feel it did when I was eleven and thought it was totally cool. I think Battle Royale is better though, if you're looking for the most action, the most gory and gruesome twisted plot. Then Battle Royale is better, keep in mind its a THICC book. Of the hunger games series, the first and second book are pretty good in terms of keeping the reader on their feet/edge of their seat, but be warned: this series suffers the Sequel Sydrome (2nd book goes downhill, but uphill a bit near the end, also not as good as the first) and of course the Third Book is Pretty Bad. This singular book though, is pretty good. If you're a pre-teen.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from OK...But Not Amazing This book is something that did not appeal to me and I read it because of all the hype. The concept was not something original and the book and no meaning or life lesson to teach young adult readers. All in all, I would not recommend this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compelling and unputdownable! This book has a strong female hero, who is intent on finding her own way in the world as must as she wants to find her true self, all while trying to keep herself and those she loves safe. An amazing story that is both shocking and engaging; a Great Read! That said, there are difficult scenes for younger readers; the thought of children being asked to battle to the death to get food for their area is horrifying...even in a dystopian world...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wow! When i first realized what the Hunger Games were i was very surprised and shocked but continued to read on, and on, and on, and on! Couldn't put this book down! Great story and concept. the only thing that annoyed me was the forced kissing every 5 minutes near the end but I had to keep reminding myself that this book was written for teens and not grown adults. Can't wait to read the sequel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard to put down. I wanted to see what the hype was about, so I gave this a try. Interesting concept. Overall a good read. I've read all three books and liked this one the most.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's OK I read this years ago but I remember liking it a lot. However my taste in books has also changed over the years and when I look back on the story, there are not many characters that I like, which is kind of sad. The story is interesting but personally, I find it to be slow. There is not much action and the "strong female protagonist who chooses her own fate," she is, frankly, kinda stupid. She mopes around a lot while others are dying, She does have her moments, notably the beginning and the end of this book, but I she is not someone I would want my kids to look up to. If you are young and into nearly sci-fi and romance, then go ahead and read this book. Analyze the themes and whatever. But be warned, many of the more interesting characters in the series are the ones that end up dead.
