about

Now in paperback, the book no one can stop talking about . . .

In the ruins of a place once known as North America lies the nation of Panem, a shining Capitol surrounded by twelve outlying districts. The Capitol is harsh and cruel and keeps the other districts in line by forcing them to participate in the annual Hunger Games, a fight-to-the-death on live TV.

One boy and one girl between the ages of twelve and sixteen are selected by lottery to play. The winner brings riches and favor tohis or her district. But that is nothing compared to what the Capitol wins: one more year of fearful compliance with its rule. Sixteen-year-old Katniss Everdeen, who lives alone with her mother and younger sister, regards it as a death sentence when she is forced to represent her impoverished district in the Games.

But Katniss has been close to dead before - and survival, for her, is second nature. Without really meaning to, she becomes a contender. But if she is to win, she will have to start making choices that weigh survival against humanity and life against love.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thought provoking and heart pounding This was one of the very first books I bought for myself. I could not put it down and finished it in a day. All of the characters and the country of Panem were so thoughtfully constructed by Suzanne Collins. Katniss Everdeen is a compelling protagonist. Her goal of survival and her desire to do the right thing are completely at odds due to the nature of the tremendously unequal society she lives in. My heart was pounding every second that she was in that arena, and I kept wondering what could possibly lead a human population to the point where it forces its children to fight to the death for food?

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great book... If you're a thirteen year old. Sure, rereading it when you're 17 is cool too, but it doesn't have the same feel it did when I was eleven and thought it was totally cool. I think Battle Royale is better though, if you're looking for the most action, the most gory and gruesome twisted plot. Then Battle Royale is better, keep in mind its a THICC book. Of the hunger games series, the first and second book are pretty good in terms of keeping the reader on their feet/edge of their seat, but be warned: this series suffers the Sequel Sydrome (2nd book goes downhill, but uphill a bit near the end, also not as good as the first) and of course the Third Book is Pretty Bad. This singular book though, is pretty good. If you're a pre-teen.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from OK...But Not Amazing This book is something that did not appeal to me and I read it because of all the hype. The concept was not something original and the book and no meaning or life lesson to teach young adult readers. All in all, I would not recommend this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Compelling and unputdownable! This book has a strong female hero, who is intent on finding her own way in the world as must as she wants to find her true self, all while trying to keep herself and those she loves safe. An amazing story that is both shocking and engaging; a Great Read! That said, there are difficult scenes for younger readers; the thought of children being asked to battle to the death to get food for their area is horrifying...even in a dystopian world...

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wow! When i first realized what the Hunger Games were i was very surprised and shocked but continued to read on, and on, and on, and on! Couldn't put this book down! Great story and concept. the only thing that annoyed me was the forced kissing every 5 minutes near the end but I had to keep reminding myself that this book was written for teens and not grown adults. Can't wait to read the sequel.
Date published: 2017-07-18
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Hard to put down. I wanted to see what the hype was about, so I gave this a try. Interesting concept. Overall a good read. I've read all three books and liked this one the most.
Date published: 2017-07-17
Rated 3 out of 5 by from It's OK I read this years ago but I remember liking it a lot. However my taste in books has also changed over the years and when I look back on the story, there are not many characters that I like, which is kind of sad. The story is interesting but personally, I find it to be slow. There is not much action and the "strong female protagonist who chooses her own fate," she is, frankly, kinda stupid. She mopes around a lot while others are dying, She does have her moments, notably the beginning and the end of this book, but I she is not someone I would want my kids to look up to. If you are young and into nearly sci-fi and romance, then go ahead and read this book. Analyze the themes and whatever. But be warned, many of the more interesting characters in the series are the ones that end up dead.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing!! I absolutely loved this book! Originally I wasn't allowed to read it, but once I did I fell in love with it! Rated 5 out of 5 by from AMAZING! Was such an original, great idea for a dystopian set novel. I absolutely loved every single part of it. It is a quick, easy read full of so much interest.
Date published: 2017-05-05
Rated 4 out of 5 by from New blood into dystopian world I wasn't really too interested in the dystopian world until I picked up THG and I was intrigued at the idea of having an arena where the main purpose was to kill your own opponents, possibly even friends, and your prize would be glory. Katniss is a stubborn character and there's little compassion for her - it's almost as if she's been so desensitized by everything around her, the only time she shows human emotions is when she's with her sister and Rue later on in the book. It's not to say I can't understand why this is the case - she's lost so much and has had to fight for so much so how can anyone expect her to live as if nothing's wrong? I liked that Peeta was there to balance and to almost show her the simple things and sort of soften her while she made him into something tougher than he was when he came into the games. Definitely a good read for someone wanting to be introduced into this genre!
Date published: 2017-05-05
Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you haven't read this, you must This novel has a special place in my heart. It's honest and unbothered just like Katniss Everdeen, the book's heroine. I love that about it. It's a serious and heart-pumping novel about children fighting to the death on live TV. It's heartbreaking, raw, and it really makes you think about your own world.
Date published: 2017-05-04
Rated 5 out of 5 by from WoW!! This was incredible. I rarely find book series that can suck me into the world its portraying; Harry Potter being the most successful. But while reading these three books I was completely put under a spell, these books kept making me read chapter after chapter and I didn't want to stop. It was like every chapter ended on a cliff hanger and I couldn't put it down. This is an amazing trilogy, don't miss it, it is a must read!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must-read in Young Adult Fiction The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins First book in The Hunger Games trilogy Plot: Every year, 24 teens are sent into an arena to fight to the death as a means of punishment in this North American dystopian setting. Katniss Everdeen volunteers after her younger sister, Prim, gets chosen. I read this book a few years back, just before the movie came out, and I haven't stopped obsessing over it to this day. This book was a nice introduction to the world of YA (Young Adult) fiction and dystopias; it sucks you into the world of Panem, into this horrific culture and the lavishing lifestyle of the Capitol (the government system). You wouldn't want to put this book down. The book itself is a quick read and fast-paced; at no point does the plot doesn't drag on. The storyline is intriguing and you can tell that Suzanne Collins put a lot of thought into the book, with her futuristic world-building, the mythological influences and her lovable characters. The characters are probably the best part of the book. Katniss, the heroine and narrator of this story, has a powerful voice that makes readers adore her. She's tough, she's a fighter but she has her flaws. Then there's Peeta Mellark, her fellow companion into the Games, who's your average boy-next-door, and Gale Hawthorne, Katniss's ever-loyal partner in crime. There are so many unforgettable characters that the list goes on and on. Reading the relationships between these characters feel so real, since you have the sister-sister relationship, the amicable friendship, and just the right amount of romance. Overall, I would recommend this book to those who are starting YA fiction, or who have a love for YA already but haven't read this book yet. All I have to say is, believe the hype around this book. #plumreview

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must read! I was skeptical of this book at first after being told by a friend about it's context. Not normally a read I would have been drawn too but once I started I couldn't wait to read the next. The story is s incredible and unrealistic however I could not put this down. You really fall in love with the characters and their lives.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from For younger readers This book is very action-packed but it is really for younger people or at least not for people who read much more sophisticated writing. Its still an interesting story.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good I will admit this book is hard to get into but once you get to the third chapter you will be hooked, for sure worth the time and money. The characters have good stories and personalities and the drama will not let you down.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fell in Love! After I finished this book I ran out right away to get the second. I loved having read the books before watching the movies as there are small details in the books that the movies don't pick up on. The first book was my favorite of the series.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good Book While this was certainly written for a younger audience than myself I nevertheless found it enjoyable. I think that this book, and the other two in the trilogy triggered a run on dystopian teen books which we have recently been seeing. I found it hard to put down and finished it in about a day or two it was that captivating.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing book I was so hooked on it when I first read it - I never expected it to be so captivating with cliffhangers on every page! I also loved how even when there was no dialogue, nothing about it was boring. Very well written!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Basic dystopian novel good read, good writing but not overly unique as far as teen novels go-- the girl with the mysterious boy in a not so far off future is relatively over done

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Trilogy If you haven't read this series yet, it is a must read. This is sure to get you into reading, especially if you are in a reading slump and not sure what to read.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Interesting read It took a while to get into, but it was an ok read. It is pretty predictable with the whole dystopian novel idea. Katniss is a character that grew on me as I kept reading it.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great YA Novel When I first read this book back in 2012 it struck me as being very intriguing and completely hooked me on the series. As a preteen, this book greatly appealed to everything that my imagination wanted though going back and reading it again 5 years later was a bit of a let down. It's a great platform for the series, even though I personally think that Catching Fire was the best, and for anyone who is just starting to get into more 'adult' literature this is definitely a good place to start. It is obvious that the book is catered towards younger readers, so older readers aren't as likely to enjoy this book as much.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Such a great book! I really enjoyed reading this novel. It was really well written and had a great set of characters that you enjoyed and wanted to follow along with. I do believe it was similar to Battle Royale which was one thing I didn't like about the book but other than that I would highly recommend this book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Speechless Amazing book, it talks about a girl who sacrifices herself to go to the hunger games instead of her younger sister, through the games she falls in love with a guy. If you love adventure then you definitely would want to read this book. You wouldn't regret buying this book

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful Trilogy If you are looking for adventure, defiance, and romance, this book has it all. Katniss is a powerful heroine with a sarcastic nature that makes her easy to connect with while reading. "The Hunger Games" is beautifully written and causes a roller coaster of emotions. I've read this trilogy 5 times now and never get tired of it. Nothing but praise for Suzanne Collins.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from great! The Hunger games (and the rest of the series) are definitely worth the read, and the hype thats come up around them. The story is interesting, tying in a little bit of romance with some series looks at human nature.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from <3 I read this in grade 10 so I was certainly young & impressionable. But i just reread it for my dystopias class (so it's been 5 years) & i'm glad that it's the same as I remember it. I feel like the violence was something I could gloss over five years ago, but now, it's so much more real in some way. The horror of it hits harder now. I'll always love this book.
