about

When a young widow's reclusive life in a charming beach town is interrupted by a surprise visitor, she is forced to reckon with dark secrets about her family, her late husband, and the past she tried to leave behind.
Lauren Adelman and her high school sweetheart, Rory Kincaid, are a golden couple. They marry just out of college as Rory, a star hockey player, earns a spot in the NHL. Their future could not look brighter when Rory shocks everyone-Lauren most of all-by enlisting in the U.S. Army. When Rory dies in combat, Lauren is left devastated, alone, and under unbearable public scrutiny.

Seeking peace and solitude, Lauren retreats to her family's old beach house on the Jersey Shore. But this summer she's forced to share the house with her overbearing mother and competitive sister. Worse, a stranger making a documentary about Rory tracks her down and persuades her to give him just an hour of her time.

One hour with filmmaker Matt Brio turns into a summer of revelations, surprises, and upheaval. As the days grow shorter and her grief changes shape, Lauren begins to understand the past-and to welcome the future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good summer read I took this book on holidays and I enjoyed it. A good summer read on the beach or by the pool.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Story Line was Flat THE HUSBAND HOUR had a lot of family drama and decision making on the parts of the characters. Each family member had an issue, and how they dealt with them was interesting. I felt the characters don't interact well with each other and that made the story line fall flat for me. I can see how the book will appeal to many, but I just couldn't connect with the characters or the story line.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay This story was pretty fluffy. Rory, a superstar NHL player-turned military hero dies in combat and leaves behind a grieving young wife, Lauren. While Lauren deals with Rory’s death by isolating herself, her family attempts to reconcile with their own problems by all moving in with one another. Matt, a film maker, tracks the family down to make a documentary-style film about Rory. I like how revelations about Lauren and Rory’s relationship were brought about throughout the chapters with her reminiscing and unpacking boxes, or through Matt’s interviews with Lauren and her sister. There were a few moments where I rolled by eyes, and even a time I blurted out, “this is so stupid,” but it was an easy read which made it somewhat enjoyable.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absorbing, poignant, and incredibly moving! The Husband Hour is a beautifully written story that delves into the complexities and dynamics of relationships between partners, siblings, and the nuclear family as a whole and reminds us that there’s no perfection in humanity, we are all wonderfully flawed. The prose is fluid and well turned. The characters are authentic, scarred and lovable. And the story is an exceptionally mesmerizing tale about life, loss, love, grief, forgiveness, familial drama, friendship, courage, community, moving on, happiness, and the enduring physical and psychological effects of sports injuries on professional athletes. Overall, The Husband Hour is the perfect blend of heart-wrenching emotion, grit, hope, and humour. It made me laugh, it made me cry, and it left me smiling, and I absolutely loved it!
