Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very Surprising Due to a shipping error I got this book four days early and since I am not under any embargo here is the review. This novel, plot wise, is very formulaic. A novel being formulaic and contrived from simple archetypes, gives a pretense that this novel was going to be boring because you can predict what happens next, although the presentation is really what really shines in this book. The about section, on this page describes the main protagonist experiences a terrible childhood tragedy which is explained in the first chapter. It focuses on onomatopoeia and descriptive language to place you in the scene and the mind of the main character when he was seven. This creates very powerful resonance. The entire book is best summed up by the author himself. Reki Kawahara writes in his afterword and describes this novel as supernatural battling. I would refrain from going into more detail because this is an introduction to a new series and like I previously mentioned this novel is formulaic and a person could make an educated guess and predict the content of the book. The book was very formulaic but I believe the reason for that was an large emphases on archetypes. In example Star Wars IV a new hope. The movie used an archetype of the prince saving the princess, and it turned out to be a fine series (4 to 6 that is). I do believe that this series has a promising future, pardon this fallacious assumption. In summary, the novel is a very interesting opening to a new series. It was surprising and a fun read.
