about

As a eunuch in the Ottoman Imperial Harem, Olin has already lost his home, his freedom, and his manhood. Olin's only wish is for a painless death, until he meets Dark Star, a beautiful odalisque who promises to give him his deepest desire. He scoffs at her offer, not believing her claim to possess a jinni in a bottle. But when Dark Star is accused of witchcraft, Olin rubs the bottle in desperation and is astonished to find she's told the truth.

Olin becomes the jinni's master to save Dark Star, but it's not enough. In the complex world of the Topkapi Palace, where silk pillows conceal knives, sherbets contain poison, and jewels buy loyalty, no one is safe. As each wish brings unintended consequences, Olin must risk his life, his body, and his sanity to break the bonds that tie them all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must read! Zenobia Neil’s “The Jinni’s Last Wish” which she terms a historical fantasy, upends every romance cliché about genies and three wishes, glamorous and lusty sheiks, and history as seen through a rose-colored filter. It is, quite simply, a richly told, carefully researched story about a eunuch—yes, a eunuch—whose job is it is to watch over and punish the females in the harem of a long ago Turkish kingdom. He is named Olin and he has a conscience, which makes him silently question the world he lives in and makes him wish for death. A female named Dark Star intrigues him: she is beautiful, mysterious, there is an aura of other-worldliness, about her. Their journey through this world of cruelty, slavery, punishment, and opium use in Neal’s lush, often erotic, and confident writing elevates “The Jinni’s Last Wish” and makes the book a must-read. Five stars for sure.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fascinating story I love this book! The story is fascinating, sensual, and engrossing. I couldn't put the book down. The characters are real - not perfect, not evil, just human. And I don't know much about the Ottoman Empire, so Zenobia Neil's details on life in the Imperial Harem, the architecture and dress of the time, the city are all so rich that I could see everything in my mind. You must read this book.
