Dan Savage's nationally syndicated sex advice column, "Savage Love," enrages and excites more than four million people each week. In The Kid, Savage tells a no-holds-barred, high-energy story of an ordinary American couple who wants to have a baby. Except that in this case the couple happens to be Dan and his boyfriend. That fact, in the face of a society enormously uneasy with gay adoption, makes for an edgy, entertaining, and illuminating read. When Dan and his boyfriend are finally presented with an infant badly in need of parenting, they find themselves caught up in a drama that extends well beyond the confines of their immediate world. A story about confronting homophobia, falling in love, getting older, and getting a little bit smarter, The Kid is a book about the very human desire to have a family.

From Our Editors

Dan Savage infuriates and delights more than four million people each week with his nationally syndicated sex-advice column “Savage Love.” Now he shares his own surprising, hilarious and moving true-life tale in The Kid. Like many ordinary American couples, Dan and his partner want to have a baby. Unfortunately, it’s difficult for two men to get pregnant. So, Dan and his boyfriend embark on a quest to obtain a kid. This engaging, edgy and evocative gay adoption tale tackles homophobia, love, maturity, wisdom and the basic need for family. But don’t expect a sappy ending from this trenchant observer of they way the world has sex — when Dan and his boyfriend finally find an infant, they’re unprepared for the drama that ensues.

Editorial Reviews

"Savage tackles the politics of gay adoption head-on...Intelligent and honest...a love story, an argument, and a how-to book all in one".

-- The San Francisco Chronicle

Employee Review

It's rare to find a book that covers so many emotions and political views, and still manages to tell a simple story. Savage's narrative style allows you to read a real-life and very honest account of adoption today. The book also deals with many important issues to both gays and straights from a refreshingly blunt and funny perspective. It is a story of what it takes -- and what it means -- to be a family today. But be warned: this is Dan Savage writing, so it's not for everyone.
