J.R. Ward's # 1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood continues as a royal bloodline is compromised by a grave threat to the throne.

Long live the King…

After turning his back on the throne for centuries, Wrath, son of Wrath, finally assumed his father’s mantle--with the help of his beloved mate. But the crown sets heavily on his head. As the war with the Lessening Society rages on, and the threat from the Band of Bastards truly hits home, he is forced to make choices that put everything--and everyone--at risk.

Beth Randall thought she knew what she was getting into when she mated the last pure blooded vampire on the planet: An easy ride was not it. But when she decides she wants a child, she’s unprepared for Wrath’s response--or the distance it creates between them.

The question is, will true love win out... or tortured legacy take over?

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I LOVED THIS BOOK "The King" by J.R. Ward. Book 12 of the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. LONG LIVE THE KING!! W-O-W!! Such a fantastic addition to this series! I would call this book a turning point in the series. This book is a return to the two main characters that started this whole series, Wrath and Beth. The glymera (with some "nudging" from Xcor) is trying to overthrow Wrath as King. Beth has been trying to kick-start her needing because she wants to have a child with Wrath but he is totally against that idea. The emotional journey Beth and Wrath go through in this book is heartbreaking. We also find out what happens to Sola after she was kidnapped in the last book. Assail does everything he can to get Sola back (and he does some pretty terrible things with absolutely no remorse). Great character building with these characters. Can't wait to read their story! The book also delves into Trez and iAm's ongoing story. Trez's emotions throughout the book are like a roller coaster ride! Their story line is left open-ended but it's a great setup for the next book about them, "The Shadows"! When I got to the end of the book, I was like WOW! The vampire world is going to be really different when the next book comes out due to some of the changes Wrath makes as King. And I also realized that there were no real "fighting" scenes in the book and it didn't bother me one bit! I didn't even notice it until I was finished the book. Not a lot of mention as to what is happening with the Lessers but there is a scene with Xcor and a Lesser that made me cringe. And some of Assail's scenes are cringe-worthy as well with what he does to people to find Sola. I love the flashes of the past of Wrath's father and mother! The love between the two just jumps off the page. And I love the parallel of what happened in the past to Wrath's father and what Wrath is going through as King in the present. Overall, the story was excellent! Gasping at some parts, cringing the next, heartbreaking moments and laughter too! What more could you ask for! LOVE LOVE LOVE this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must Read Series ! I believe this book is # 12 in the series of The Black Dagger Brotherhood, and this series is a must read ! I cried, laughed and chewed my finger nails completely off while reading this book. J.R. Ward has such a talented gift of bringing this imaginative world to life, so much so that it makes me want to become the next "shellan". This book felt like a crucial introduction to future installments of the master plan but still leaves me desperate for the next addition(s).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it! Although it is a transition book, I love the development in all the story lines and look forward to the books that will be specific to each individual story line. Can't wait for the drama (and love) to unfold one by one!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic I loved the Kings and hope it leads onto more stories of the Warriors. Like babies for Butch and Marissa, Phurry and Cormia, and how Qhuinn and Layla made out in their arrangement with their baby. And Xcor and Layla also. Sola and Assail and of course The Band of Bastards, they need to be told about too. Looking forward to the next book.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Scattered This instalment was a disappointment. It should have been a tip-off that the title didn't have "Lover" in it - like the previous 11 books. This was definitely a "transition" book - to set up future books. There were too many narrators (at least 10!), a scant amount of romance, and almost no war. The story tries to center on Wrath (my least favourite of the brothers), but even then the plot is scattered and lacks focus. After book 1 in the series, this one is probably my least favourite. I only "recommend" this read if you are committed to the series.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Its a J R Ward... Enough Said The King is book twelve in J R Wards amazing Black Dagger Brotherhood series and I loved it from start to finish. This book follows Wrath and Beth who we met in the very fist book of this series, I thought it was great that we got another book featuring this couple because they bring the series to a whole. Even after twelve books I never get bored reading these, this was one of most anticipated books of this year and I am sure it will be one of the favorites as well. The story was fantastic, the continued development between the characters and story were off the charts and I cant wait to see who is going to be next. Overall this book was amazing and sooo worth the year it took to come out, cant wait for more.
