They are the Caradynes, who for over 200 years have bred and trained horses of the finest caliber on Coernanagh. But all is not idyllic at hearth and home. Catriona, the youngest child, longs to ride her family's big jumpers and show horses. Her father Michael, recognizes her gift, but her mother hates the very idea. All is in a stalemate until Lady Selina Healy enters their lives, and provides for Catriona and her father a stunning example of how the reins of power can be held by a glorious, fearless woman.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Love it You're never quite sure who this book is about but it's a lovely story. It feela like there is so much to this story that when it's done, you want more. In my opinion the well written story should always end this way; leaving you wanting a sequel.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absorbing family saga Fantasy author McCaffrey trades dragons for horses and magical Pern for prosaic 70's Ireland...and it's a surprisingly smooth transition. Really charming characters, lots of horsey detail and an overlay of real-world angst provide satisfying distraction while the romance runs its inevitable (but satisfying) course. A wonderful vacation read for adults; because of the child's viewpoint, also could be fun for teens who've finished the 'Thoroughbred' books etc. (Incidentally, the novel is known as 'The Carradyne Touch' in the UK; this American edition also provides a helpful glossary of Irish and horse terms.)
