about

Inspired by myth, fairy tale, and folklore, #1 New York Times-bestselling author Leigh Bardugo has crafted a deliciously atmospheric collection of short stories filled with betrayals, revenge, sacrifice, and love.

Enter the Grishaverse...

Love speaks in flowers. Truth requires thorns.

Travel to a world of dark bargains struck by moonlight, of haunted towns and hungry woods, of talking beasts and gingerbread golems, where a young mermaid's voice can summon deadly storms and where a river might do a lovestruck boy's bidding but only for a terrible price.

Perfect for new readers and dedicated fans, the tales in The Language of Thorns will transport you to lands both familiar and strange-to a fully realized world of dangerous magic that millions have visited through the novels of the Grishaverse.

This collection of six stories includes three brand-new tales, each of them lavishly illustrated and culminating in stunning full-spread illustrations as rich in detail as the stories themselves.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hugely inventive and amazing Bardugo absolutely knew what she was doing when she wrote this book. So many of the myths have half-shared stories with ours, and she uses those intentional similarities to pull the rug out from under our feet. I especially loved the mermaid one. They have quite different morals for the stories than I think ours do! Don't trust fairweather friends, watch your back. All things that definitely fit into the world of stories that she's built in her series, where these tales belong. Seriously good!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Absolutely Amazing I've got no words for how much I loved this book. Seriously, being a fan of the Grishaverse makes this an extra special treat, but I would also recommend it to anyone who loves breathtaking fantasy and grew up reading fairytales. Each story was different, based off well known folklore but given a fantastic twist, and I honestly can hardly pick a favourite (though it's probably the last one). The writing was equally as gorgeous as the creative artwork, which I was happy to discover is placed through the entire book. It's art through and through, and I was so happy to pick it up and experience it, then explain what it was to countless people who asked me. If you're a fan of Leigh Bardugo, the Grisha books, if you love fairytales with powerful women at their helm, or if you simply love short, fantasy stories, this is the book you've been waiting for. Pick it up ASAP––you won't regret it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Hauntingly beautiful tales Leigh Bardugo is one of my top 3 favourite authors and she does not disappoint with this collection of dark and clever short stories. This is the kind of book you want to read around a campfire. The illustrations are magnificent. They become more elaborate as each story progresses until the final image at the end. Very cool! #plumreview
