about

This fast-paced action novel is set in a future where the world has been almost destroyed. Like the award-winning novel Freak the Mighty, this is Philbrick at his very best.

It's the story of an epileptic teenager nicknamed Spaz, who begins the heroic fight to bring human intelligence back to the planet. In a world where most people are plugged into brain-drain entertainment systems, Spaz is the rare human being who can see life as it really is. When he meets an old man called Ryter, he begins to learn about Earth and its past. With Ryter as his companion, Spaz sets off an unlikely quest to save his dying sister -- and in the process, perhaps the world.

Reviews

Rated 5 out of 5 by from So good it's worth reviewing twice! I really mean it when I say this book is great. Read my review of the regular book to see what I mean (I do suggest you get the regular book over this one though)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An absolutely staggeringly beautiful and gripping dystopian work When I read this as a child I was completely transfixed by it. What a great work! This book paints a bleak yet arresting picture of dystopian world where books are obsolete and everyone is "plugged in" to an alternate reality. It has beautiful characters, thrilling action, a lot of deep insights about technology that are eerily prescient and has an ending that offers hope without pulling its punches. I could not recommend it more highly

Rated 5 out of 5 by from OMG What great characters! I adore Ryter (WRITER! It took me a while to pick up on that!) This is an unexpectedly great read. It's got some twists you don't see coming & family, family is so important. And people's stories. <3
