Reviews

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Wonderfully unpredictable If you’re looking to lose yourself in a post–World War 2 era story filled with action, romance, and a few other twists and surprises, this book’s for you. It’s a real page-turner that gradually reveals hidden details about the main characters, Amelia and Laura, in often witty, snappy dialogue and cinematic style narration. While the story begins with a single mystery, others sprout up along the way so there’s no chance for a reader to get settled in a mindset where you’re sure of everything going on and what’s going to happen next; that said I didn’t find the story confusing as any questions raised in my mind while reading were all answered in due time. The dialogue style fits with the time period along with the attitudes of homophobia and sexism in some characters. The sometimes dark subject matter (appropriate for the era depicted) is fairly well balanced with lighter moments of humor even in the most dire of situations. I read the entire book in a matter of hours, continually curious about what was going on since the author keeps the reader in the dark as much as the characters for maximum surprises thru the book. Secondary characters are equally entertaining as the main ones and enrich the story rather than thinning it out. I had expected a different story from the synopsis and the title of the book but was not at all disappointed by what was delivered in its place. I’ll be watching for more Meg Harrington books now to see what other stories she has to tell.
