A MONG the many and various nationalities of ** the Russian Empire at present gathered by Providence into one body, there is found in the Armenian people, also called Ha'iks or Ha'ikans, the remnant of one of the oldest stocks or types of the human race. In spite of endless vicissitudes and revolutions during a long line of centuries, this people alone, among Eastern nations, still retains its peculiar features with, as it were, stubborn constancy and exclusiveness. It still cherishes its original customs, manners, and habits, together with the associations and ideas inherited from a high ancestry, not only wherever it is scattered over the whole earth, but especially at home, in the land of its once powerful and glorious existence; where it now lingers among the ruins of its ancient cities, and the crumbling monuments of its great men of old. Yet in no respects is the Armenian people so whole and united as in matters of faith drawn from the first at the spring of Eastern light, through the preaching of Christ's Gospel, which, owing to peculiar circumstances, has caused a singular exception in the Christian world*--namely, the isolated individual community called the Armenian Church. 1 Translated from Russian State Papers.
