He settled all his little affairs in Stralsund as if he were about to depart this life, and then he escaped from the university--actually ran away, with ten or twelve thalers in his pocket, and the few clothes he could squeeze into portable compass. His object was to seek employment, but he avoided towns, lest he should fall in with some of his late fellowstudents. He passed quickly through Greifswald and wandered on in the country, depending on the hospitality of peasants. Wayfaring adventures were not distasteful to one of his turn of mind, but he felt disappointed in being repeatedly unsuccessful in his attempts to procure employment. At length, on one fortunate afternoon he applied at the residence of Captain von Parsenus, an elderly man, who had discernment enough to see something promising in the young stranger. By open-hearted kindness lie won Arndt's confidence, listened to his story, and advised him to write home immediately to say that, provided his father saw no objection, he would remain with Captain von Parsenus, to whom he could in various ways be useful. Five days after this letter was dispatched, it was answered by the arrival of his elder brother Charles and his Uncle Moritz Schumacher, who brought a letter from his father. They had come from Lobnitz, an estate in Pomerania belonging to the Putbus family, on which Arndt was then living, and they persuaded Ernst to return with them to the home at Lobnitz in his native island.
