Rated 4 out of 5 by from Okay The lodger was fine to read in a quick sitting. It mirrors the Ripper murders and was written about 20 years after they occurred. A retired couple on the eve of bankruptcy finds a most convenient lodger who has offered them a considerable sum up front to stay. He is peculiar and requires little more than the basic necessities--including a stove to conduct 'experiments--to be comfortable. The wife catches on very quickly to his strangeness and senses that what might not be right about him, including sneaking out in the middle of the night only for a murder victim to appear the next day, is far more sinister than she could have imagined. This story has a few decent creepy moments and leaves just the right amount of questions at the end, but wasn't as exciting or perhaps Gothic as I'd hoped. Anyway a very good classic for any early thriller lover's shelf!
