about

In the tradition of his beloved first novel,The Notebook, #1New York Timesbestselling author Nicholas Sparks returns with the remarkable story of two couples whose lives intersect in profound and surprising ways.
Ira Levinson is in trouble. Ninety-one years old and stranded and injured after a car crash, he struggles to retain consciousness until a blurry image materializes beside him: his beloved wife Ruth, who passed away nine years ago. Urging him to hang on, she forces him to remain alert by recounting the stories of their lifetime together - how they met, the precious paintings they collected together, the dark days of WWII and its effect on them and their families. Ira knows that Ruth can't possibly be in the car with him, but he clings to her words and his memories, reliving the sorrows and everyday joys that defined their marriage.

A few miles away, at a local bull-riding event, a Wake Forest College senior's life is about to change. Recovering from a recent break-up, Sophia Danko meets a young cowboy named Luke, who bears little resemblance to the privileged frat boys she has encountered at school. Through Luke, Sophia is introduced to a world in which the stakes of survival and success, ruin and reward -- even life and death - loom large in everyday life. As she and Luke fall in love, Sophia finds herself imagining a future far removed from her plans -- a future that Luke has the power to rewrite . . . if the secret he's keeping doesn't destroy it first.

Ira and Ruth. Sophia and Luke. Two couples who have little in common, and who are separated by years and experience. Yet their lives will converge with unexpected poignancy, reminding us all that even the most difficult decisions can yield extraordinary journeys: beyond despair, beyond death, to the farthest reaches of the human heart.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not a fan I've read some of his other books in the past and loved them but I wasn't a fan of this Nicholas Sparks book. But, that my be my own fault since I did watch the movie before reading this book. I saw the movie in theatres and loved it so decided to buy the book and didn't like it as much. I just found the book boring and hard to read. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I Read It Again and Again I loved how this book tied in present love with past romance. Two couples (although very different) have the tied in relative fact of being so different to their partner. Overcoming stacked odds against them, whether it be because of war or bull fighting keeps you on the edge of your seat as you cheer for their success. A complex plot, but well worth the read!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A must read!!! I read this book several times within a span of a few months and now I ready it yet again, I love this book! It has a little bit of everything, cowboys, horse and love, what more can you ask for in a book.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Ugh Just a brutally boring story; unrealistic "perfectly imperfect" characters who I gave up on half way through the book.
Date published: 2017-02-24

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My favourite Sparks book I am a fan of Nicholas Sparks and this is my favourite story by far. Cleverly written love story between two eras, it brings the most unlikely of characters from such different backgrounds together. It's not just a rodeo romance as the title may suggest!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of my faves This book was amazing, I loved the story line and thought it was very relatable to what many people go through in life. This is by far one of my favourite books.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good. The story lost my interest a few times because of the somewhat long descriptions and I felt like not much was happening in the story at first to keep my interest. But of course the book had its very good points as well: I loved the characters, Nicholas Sparks makes it easy to fall in love with them and develop emotional attachments to them. He also seems to really get what all-encompassing, passionate true love really is about and it heightens my faith in a way. I'm a hopeless romantic so it fits haha. I also really liked how the story flowed and how it ended, it left me with a smile and a flutter of faith in my heart. Nicholas Sparks has a gift, I believe, for tying in different storylines and characters and interweaving very interesting, emotional occurrences of life.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Pretty good! I just finished reading this book, it was my first ever Nicholas Sparks book that I've read. It was a really lovely story and I loved the background couple and their storyline just as much as the main one. I think that the story was a little slower in some places compared to others in almost an unnecessary way. To me, I found some parts of the novel to be almost as if the author was just drawling on. But then again, I did watch the movie before I read the book (I know, terrible mistake!) so maybe I felt that way. Other than that, it was really wonderful and I can definitely see myself reading another Sparks novel in the future.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great! I was quite surprised with how much I ended up loving this one, as the original premise really didn't appeal to me at all. However, I loved how the story was being told from two different generations, and the ending blew me away, and had me wanting more. Another great novel by Mr. Sparks!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from One of my Favorites I recently picked this up on my way home from work. The cover caught my eye and the fact that it was Nicholas Sparks helped a bit too. Capturing stories of two couples in two different points in life, intertwined nicely although I found the ending lacking something. Overall, one of my top five picks out of all his books.
Date published: 2014-05-29
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good read I have always loved Nicholas Sparks and was quite excited to read his latest novel. Like his other novels I found this one predictable, and though there were a couple of twists, overall I found the entire book kind of a plateau with no surprises. I started out really liking reading Luke and Sophia's parts, then about halfway into the story I found Ira's parts were getting more interesting. Although it was not the most amazing book I have read it was a nice story about love.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from For my daughter I bought this for my daughter for a Christmas present as this is one of her favorite authors. I think she will really enjoy it. Thank you

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Story! Review: Grand Central Publishing|September 17, 2013|Hardcover|ISBN: 978-1-4555-2065-7 Ninety-one-year-old, Ira Levinson found himself in big trouble. His car has gone off the road in a snowstorm and down a steep embankment. Already frail and in poor health he is completely isolated and all alone. Will someone see his car down the embankment and rescue him, or will he suffer from his injuries and the cold and succumb to his death? As Ira fights with himself to stay conscious, a blurred image appears beside him – his dead wife, Ruth who has passed away nine years ago. Ruth talks to Ira about the life they lived together to keep him focused, alert, and thinking to prevent him from lapsing into unconsciousness. Ira has a difficult time at first believing that Ruth is really there with him but finally reconciles it in his mind and accepts it. Ira and Ruth talked back and forth about the good times and the bad times in their marriage. Ira has been deeply, deeply in love with his beloved Ruth and missed her more than words could ever express. College student, Sophia Danko is at a western dance with her friend and roommate, Marcia. Not feeling up to dancing and not knowing how to line dance, Sophia goes outside into the fresh night air. Within a few minutes her drunk ex-boyfriend, Brian strolled up and began to hassle her. When he grabbed her by the wrist he was hurting her. Just then a strikingly handsome cowboy named, Luke came to her aid. Within seconds he had, Brian lying down, face first in the dirt with his boot on the back of his neck. After finishing with Brian, Luke and Sophia strike up a conversation and it doesn’t take long for them to begin dating. Luke ends up showing Sophie a whole new word that she has never seen before – that of rodeo’s and farming. As they get to know each other they horseback ride, attend rodeo’s together where Sophie watches Luke bull ride. They are falling more and more in love. Sophie begins to ponder what a permanent future would be like with Luke – that is, if the secret he is keeping doesn’t totally destroy their relationship first. Soon, the lives of Luke and Sophie and Ira and Ruth will come together in the most unexpected way. I loved The Longest Ride. The plot was great, the characters well fleshed out and the ending totally blew me away. I didn’t see that coming at all. Nicholas Sparks has written another winner, a book to be enjoyed by all.
