Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mind-blowing! This was a captivating read that I found myself falling in love with. Once I started with the hobbit, I count not help but continue on with the rest. This could not have gone any better and still has the same effect on me every time I read it again-which is a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome Illustrated Edition This 3-volume hardcover illustrated by Alan Lee is a classic. It's one of the best editions ever published. The artwork is stunning to say the least. There is also a hardcover edition of The Silmarillion that matches this one perfectly. Search 9780618391110 to find it. I highly recommend getting both this set, and that book together. There is also an illustrated Hobbit [search 9780261103306] to complete your illustrated Tolkien set.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Edition This edition, the single-volume hardcover edition with the black cover (in case Chapter bunches reviews of all the editions of a book together like Amazon....) is highly recommended. For starts, it features the correct text (if a copy of The Lord of the Ring was published 2004 or later, you'll be set), features extendable maps, as well as a special plate section. It also matches very well with The Hobbit (search "Hobbit 2nd Ed" here on Chapters for the matching edition) and Harper Collins' hardback editions of The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales, which sadly aren't listed on Chapters. You can get them easily enough off of or [The Silmarillion features a mountain, and Unfinished Tales shows a dragon coming out of a cave.] Really, though, it'll look awesome on your shelf, either on its own, or with hardback editions of The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales to compliment it. It's also well-priced, as you get the complete Lord of the Rings story, in hardcover, for under $80.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nothing Could Ever Compare Hands down my favorite series, the fantasy and writing are brilliant, it is truly an experience you can't find anywhere else. I am so glad I read this series, and this set was a perfect addition for an avid J.R.R Tolkien fan. If I could give more than 5 stars I would, I definitely recommend buying!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from I LOVED THIS I've always been a fan of LOTR and this is incredibly awesome!
Date published: 2016-11-04
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Warning: Incredibly Boring! I never thought there would be a fantasy novel I would hate. That was until I read LOTR. The writing is incredibly old and hard to grasp. Tolkein spends a huge chunk of time with descriptions. Even supposedly intense, life & death scenes are extremely boring because you are aware of the narrator describing the battle bit by bit. I have an extremely hard time understanding why Tolkein is still such a highly acclaimed author today.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Mythology for Great Britain What an epic tale! It's not a light read but well worth it. What an amazing vision Tolkien had for his ancient homeland.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An absolutely must read book! This is definitely the best book ever written. I have read them every year since I was 10, and I have never gotten tired of them. Tolkien writes in such a way that you cannot put the book down. You have to read this book!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The crown jewel for any LOTR fan This single volume contains, 'Fellowship of the Ring', 'Two Towers' and 'Return of the King' along with 'The Book of Mazarbul,' from which Gandalf reads in Balin's Tomb in the Mines of Moria, an appendix that enables readers to decipher the dwarfish script, two-color foil stamping; a protective box with inset panels; a fully corrected text; two large-format two-color fold-out maps; and a ribbon place-marker. The book is well constructed with leather hardcover and beautiful binding that is sure to last through many readings. A great investment for any Tolkien fan.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Only True Classic In the world of literature, few books have touched me in so many ways, as the Lord of the Rings has. Should I be trapped on a desert island, I only hope that I can have this book to keep me company! This year I read it for the 10th time in less than 6 years and I never fail to take away something new with each reading. Tolkien has infused his text with such life and love that one cannot help but be drawn in and absorbed into Middle Earth. There are many books out there that are considered classics - but this is the one TRUE classic. It is both a joy to read and the story and language are truly everlasting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from On a scale of 1-5, I give it a 10 Well, I am a ringer, so I am a bit biased, hehe. For those of you who have never picked up the book or seen the movies, you don't know what you are missing. For those of you who loved the movies, but haven't read the books, read them! They will definitely further open the doors to Middle Earth. There is so much depth to this story and world and the books are a great starting place or next step to anyone who is remotely interested. I opened this book 5 years ago and now I am even learning Elvish! I love this book and the story has so many morals and is so emotional. Some find the beginning dry, but the heart of the story, the actual struggles and relations of the characters are so amazing. Middle Earth is deeper than the depths of Khazad-Dum. Everytime I open a book of Middle Earth, I learn something new and a smile is brought upon my face. The actions of the characters, the cultures of Ennorath, and the little details of this world all inspire me, both in my daily life and in my dreams. One of the books to read before you die.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Greatest Novel Of The Millenium This is without doubt the best thing written in the twentieth century but, also in my opinion, in the last 1000 years. No one will ever come close to the sheer amount of information about an imaginary world that Tolkien has. The scope and breadth of the novel are beyond the word Epic . It is a book that should relate to anyone; adults and children alike. There are profound values in there: loyalty, friendship, courage, pity, resourcefulness, love, trust, compassion and, as Gandalf puts it: Hope without guarantees . Everything is perfect and in the end, nothing is quite the same. The ending is a happy one but not in the classic sense of the word. It ends in bittersweetness rather than perfect happiness. Enjoy your reading!!!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Lord of all fiction What can one say that hasn't already been said about the most epic battle of good vs. evil? Immortalized for the generations to come, Lord Of The Rings is amusing, amazing, fun, scary and suspenseful and surely the work of a master writer. The characters are alive, the events real and the landcape ever so uniquely convincing. Perhaps, for once, the legend lives up to its reputation. Never before has the choice of the best work in a given genre been such an easy and universal win.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Great book, terrible edition This is an awful edition. The paper is thin, practically newsprint, and the book itself is too large to read comfortably. Buy the 3 individual books, not this omnibus edition.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Tolkien has invented a knockout! These books are very interesting and well thought of. (Much more orginal than Harry Potter) This triliogy is not to be read for a bit of light reading. Only read these books if you are serious about it. You cannot put thrse books down for a month and then pick them up and expect to remember what has been happening. PAY ATTENTION!!!! Basically what I want to say is READ THIS TRILIOGY!!!! ITS ONE OF THE BEST EVER!!!!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Must Read!!! This book, the Lord of the rings is, in my oppinion and many of my friends opinion, the best book of all time. I believe that Tolien, the master, no, the lord of fantasy has put his talents into this book and has made a beutiful peace of writing. In my opinion this book makes all other fantasy novels(and I have ready many) pail in comparison. I highly recomend this book to all who have the time to read. Enjoy!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Book Of The Century The Lord of the Rings by JRR Tolkien is a Masterpiece. You can through yourself Into a whole new World and take a perilous journey across the west of middle earth.Several new languages will be introduced along with a calendar for the animals and people who dwell across the land. Tolkien has forged a novel so great, that it will continue to inspire readers across the world for centuries to come.(I recommend that you read THE HOBBIT before you dive into The Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit gives you the background for the novel along with a great story line)

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantasy At It's best If you are into fantasy than you have to read this book. The premier work of fantasy in literature, Tolkien weaves a unforgettable story filled with amazing creatures and mythical settings. When I read it as kid I was a bit wary of reading such a LONG book but after reading the first few chapters I wished the book would never end. I recommend this book for anyone who has ever been interested in fantasy/adventure or if you are just looking for a great read. A big thumbs up for this book!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Book of the Century They call this book, "The Book of the Century" and they are right. This book was the first epic I ever read. It left me thinking that everyone wrote as well as Tolkien did. When I discovered my error, it only increased my appreciation for this book. It has been said that fans of The Lord of the Rings do not read the book just once: they read it once a year. Although I have fallen short of that average, I have, however, read this book twenty times and I am still finding new previously undiscovered revelations each and every time I read it! This book is a keeper and well worth buying a hardcover version if you find that you can slip yourself into Tolkien's world as easily as I first did at age 10.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from enchanting It is no wonder that this book is commonly referred to as the Book of the 20th Century. Tolkien is a master storyteller at his best. He takes us to an enchanting world where the presence of evil is as real as it is in ours and the struggle of the good as difficult, sorrowful and never-ending. The different inhabitants and the landscape of Tolkien's imaginary and yet so real world are all described with color and pure genius. The sense of journey that Tolkien exerts in the story is overwhelming and a unique feature of the book. In Lord of the Rings, Frodo the Hobbit is given the seemingly hopeless task of destroying the One Ring possessing unimaginable power and evil and must travel to the very heart of darkness to do so. He is not however alone in his quest and is accompanied by characters so powerfully created that their memory is sure to remain with the reader for many years to come. To say that the book is hence highly recommended is a gross understatement and to site the incredible feat of imagination and the enchanting storytelling that has made Lord of the Rings the classic that it truly is, still belittles the fabulous experience that is reading it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simply the best. As anyone who has read this astounding book will know; "The Lord of the Rings" is the definitive novel of the fantasy genera. It was one of the first of its kind, and it helped shape and mold fantasy to come; so that Tolkien's legacy lives on in the novels of today. It has stood the test of time, and has been a favorite among many for almost 50 years - and will continue to be for as many more. Theres no denying "The Lord of the Rings."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Lord of the Rings Tolkiens's Lord of the Rings is the defining standard against which all other fantasy works, in my opinion, must be measured. It has now been twenty-two years since it first captured my imagination as a schoolboy, and I have returned to savour it countless times. Tolkien's creation of the noble Elves and their epic struggle against their ancient foe Sauron alongside the tragic men of the forgotten realm of Numenor, and the merry Shire hobbits is as rich and historic a world as our own. Frodo the hobbit must leave his peaceful home on a mission to destroy the Ring, which the Dark Lord needs to conquer Middle-Earth, and journeying with Frodo are the mysterious wizard Gandalf, the stern Lord Aragorn, Ranger of the North and many other characters, the like of which the literary world has yet to see again. Magical swords, the mystical Elf Queen of the Lorien Woods, the terrifying Black Riders who pursue Frodo throughout Middle-Earth, and the wretched Gollum are all unforgettable pieces of the puzzle. Any lover of the fantasy genre cannot call themselves so without first delving in the Lord of the Rings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from SHEER GENIUS How do I begin? Well, this book is pure imagination genius. The fact that he made many different cultures within his world of complete magic and splendour is truly amazing. All of the races of Middle Earth are as real as the book in front of your face. They are so elaborately real that they have there own belief system. You can feel yourself drawn into Middle Earth the minute you start reading. Throughout this miraculous adventure you can feel the character's grief, joy, excitement, or any emotion that the endless, extravagantly crafted mind of Tolkien can portray. The amazing adventure will bring along with it through the many fantastic realms of Tolkien's endless imagination. This is one the most magnificent book in history and should be read by one and all. So please if you haven't read this I highly suggest getting yourself a copy and indulge in the most beautiful experience a book can ever, and will ever give a person.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A work of Magic I cannot recall how many times I have now read this book. It is one that I treat my self to every once in a while on a job well done. Its litererary mastery is something that one cannot ignore. Its imagery is one that picks you up and does not let you go. Frodo and his friends weave their readers into the story until the last page. Your lives and their lives become intertwined for an exaulting but brief period of time. This book promises the best... and it delivers.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The First Masterpiece of Modern Fantasy The Lord of the Rings started the modern fantasy genre with a bang. It has been my favorite book since I first read it in grade 6 and stimulates my imagination every time I read it. The scope and scale of the book is beyond belief until you've read it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from ~Greatest Book Ever~ Quoting the back cover of the Lord of the Rings "The English speaking world is divided into two parts, those who have read the Hobbit and the Lord of the Ring and those who are going to read them, Sunday Times". This could not be more true. I will feel priviliged if I ever stumble upon a trilogy so captivating!. I read the second book (The Two Towers) in less than a day the first time I read the trilogy. Now as I begin to read the same trilogy for the 3rd time I still feel the same sense of awe as I did when I read the book for the first time. An exellent buy!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from the best... book i have ever read in my life!!!! i am so hooked on this series. everyone should read it at least once.
Date published: 2000-08-25
Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Greatest Series Ever! This series is the pinnacle and the standard of Fantasy/Fiction. It is this series and the Hobbit that all current writers of this genre look to as their basic building block. I can not recommend or urge you to buy this and read it enough. Words can't quite describe this masterpiece. There is only one slow point in this and that is in the fourth book(Book 2 of The Two Towers) It gets a bit slow in my opinion, but it doesn't last long, or it is forgotten in the last two books which are the best words I have ever seen put together. Everytime I read this series I lose myself in its descriptions. I feel as if I am in that world and that this is our actual history at moments. It is that good. I only wish there could have been a fourth part. I don't know what could really happen in it, but anything that Tolkien would write would have been great, judging by this series and the Hobbit. This book was not rated the book of the Millennium for nothing. The only other writers which I could say rival Tolkien are Robert Jordan with his Wheel of Time series and Terry Brookes with the Shannarra series. Both of which have many similar occurences, object, etc. in them. I strongly suggest you read all of these novels.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from must buy This novel is an amazing clasic. J.R.R. Tolkien created a masterpeice of a novel. If you are interested in Fantasy, Frodo and the fellowship will keep you at the edge of your seat. It starts with the joining of the fellowship and ends with the destruction of the ring and the end of the 3rd era. It is a must buy.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from lord of the rings i am but 15 but i am certain of one thing the power and complexity of that novel is truly spell binding. the author has a way to bring you into the story and make you think if this civilization really did exist. all these components make it one of the greatest works of human litturature of the century

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Lord of the Rings This book was very good. It was about a distant land that was always in competition of good versus evil. The dark lord Sauron created a ring which was pure evil and it was lost. If the dark lord got the ring back, he would have the most terrifying power over all of the land. The catch, however was that the ring could only be destroyed in the fire which it was created. If you are to read this excellent book series, you should probably first reat "THE HOBBIT" also written by J.R.R. Tolkien

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Series Ever Written This trilogy has to be one of the best ever written. Also, the writer (J.R.R. Tolkein) must be one of the most ingenious authors in the world. When I read this book I travelled into a whole different world. With its vast history and description I just couldn't stop reading. I am in Grade 8 and I didn't even like reading before I read this book for a book report. Now I love these books and am starting on the second one already. I just finished the first book yesterday! I really recommend these books. You will love them!! So go down to your library or book store and read them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from What? You never read LotR? To review "The Lord of the Rings" in detail would be to exhaust every superlative compliment ever written in the English language. These books are beyond words. Tolkien has created a world of such vastness, such intricacy, such complexity and such beauty that it seems an impossible task for any group of mortal men, let alone one; his exploit goes unrivalled, and I doubt anyone will ever equal him. If you ever read fantasy other than Tolkien's works, be aware it is probably copied almost in its entirety on Middle-Earth, and poorly at that. Once you've read "The Lord of the Rings", no other fantasy book will ever hold up to the comparison.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from One of the best I first read this book 20 years ago and lived in a world of such immagination that I was in awe and wished I never had to leave it.
