about

Mitch Albom creates his most unforgettable fictional character—Frankie Presto, the greatest guitarist to ever walk the earth—in this magical novel about the bands we join in life and the power of talent to change our lives.

In his most stunning novel yet, the voice of Music narrates the tale of its most beloved disciple, young Frankie Presto, a war orphan raised by a blind music teacher in a small Spanish town. At nine years old, Frankie is sent to America in the bottom of a boat. His only possession is an old guitar and six precious strings.

But Frankie’s talent is touched by the gods, and his amazing journey weaves him through the musical landscape of the 20th century, from classical to jazz to rock and roll, with his stunning talent affecting numerous stars along the way, including Hank Williams, Elvis Presley, Carole King, Wynton Marsalis and even KISS.

Frankie becomes a pop star himself. He makes records. He is adored. But his gift is also his burden, as he realizes, through his music, he can actually affect people’s futures—with one string turning blue whenever a life is altered.

At the height of his popularity, Frankie Presto vanishes. His legend grows. Only decades later, does he reappear—just before his spectacular death—to change one last life.

With its Forest Gump-like romp through the music world, The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto is a classic in the making. A lifelong musician himself, Mitch Albom delivers a remarkable novel, infused with the message that “everyone joins a band in this life” and those connections change us all.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from An unexpected surprise I was introduced to this book by my wife. I gave in after some initial resistance and was fully prepared to dislike it as it’s not really my preferred genre – I more enjoy thrillers and sci-fi if I’m going to read fiction. Turns out that I learned a thing or two about broadening my horizons. I could not put this book down until I finished it! The novel tells the story of Frankie Presto, an extraordinarily talented guitarist, by jumping back and forth between the present day to the past. We get to know Frankie through (fictional) posthumous interviews with musicians he had interacted with. The story of his mysterious past is also told through the viewpoint of music (if music was a person who could talk). I thought these were interesting mechanics through which to tell the story. The story itself was touching. Frankie came off as a very sympathetic character, enduring a difficult childhood. Happiness evades him even as he finds success in adulthood. Frankie establishes several important relationships in his life: first to his adopted father, then his music teacher. A lot of time is spent on Frankie’s interactions with them, developing them into rich characters. Eventually, Frankie’s life comes full circle, and he uses his last magic string in the ultimate act of forgiveness. I thoroughly enjoyed this book, though at times it get a touch depressing. Nevertheless, the story is lovingly told and beautifully written. This book is highly recommended, and has encouraged me to seek out Mitch Albom’s other work as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from National Staff Pick It’s my first Albom’s book and I have to say that I’m not disappointed at all. Even though it’s not my favorite book, I really appreciated the story in general and the way it’s told. We go back and forth from Frankie Presto’s life and his funeral. Presto is a very well-known musician who didn’t have the easiest life. So we learn about his troubled past and his struggles with fame once he became an adult. The mysterious part of this musician is that sometimes, when he would play, one of his guitar chords would turn blue and someone’s life would be changed for ever. Although we don’t know what happens when all the chords turn blue… Even though some moments were not that important for the story, I would say that it’s interesting and I would recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Like walking through the history of Rock and Roll. If my 5/5 rating isn’t indication enough, it is safe to say that I loved this book. I was just as captivated with Albom’s fiction as I was with his non-fiction. The multiple time periods were right up my alley and the way he weaved real life people into Frankie’s story was so imaginative. Initially I was concerned that the shift between time periods would be confusing. The fact that most of the story is narrated by “Music” was quite different from anything I had ever read before. However the change in time was clearly noted and the narration offered readers a view of the characters life that was quite unique. I would definitely recommend The Magic Strings of Frankie Presto to music lovers young and old. This was such a clever story that I couldn’t put down. I am very much looking forward to reading more by Mitch Albom.
