From Lionel Shriver, the acclaimed author of the National Book Award finalist So Much for That and the international bestseller We Need to Talk About Kevin, comes a striking new novel about family, money and global economic crisis

The year is 2029, and nothing is as it should be. The very essence of American life, the dollar, is under attack. As the result of a coordinated move by the rest of the world’s governments, the dollar loses all value. The American president declares that the United States will default on its loans. Prices skyrocket, currency becomes essentially worthless and we watch one family struggle to survive through it all.

The Mandibles can count on their inheritance no longer, and each family member must come to terms with this in their own way—from elegant expat author Nollie, returning to the U.S. in middle age after many years abroad, to her precocious teenage nephew, Willing, who is the only one to actually understand the crisis, to brilliant Georgetown economics professor Lowell, who watches his whole vision of the world disintegrate before his eyes.

As ever, Shriver draws larger-than-life characters who illuminate this complicated, changing world. One of our sharpest observers of human nature, Shriver challenges us to think long and hard about the society we live in and what, ultimately, we hold most dear.

Lionel Shriver was born Margaret Ann Shriver on May 18, 1957 in Gastonia, North Carolina. She changed her first name because of her preference for it. She was educated at Barnard College, and Columbia University (BA, MFA). She has lived in Nairobi, Bangkok and Belfast, and currently lives in London. Shriver wrote seven novels and publi...

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent I loved this book. The concept, the characters, the gradual breaking apart of society and their family.....I was totally engaged and found it hard to put down. Whether or not the economics discussed are fact based or no, as an imagined dystopic future, does it matter? I'm not sure.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Engaging yet enraging A well-written and engaging read that is however bogged down by its hammy political messaging and dubious economic analysis. It is the prime example of a non-economist attempting to smear the caricatures of real economists who may be less sympathetic to the author's more Austrian economic views.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It was okay At first I really enjoyed the near-future setting of an economic collapse - it was inventive and different. The economics were interesting! But by about half way through I began to lose interest and it became a bit of a slog. This is not as powerful as the author's previous "We need to talk about Kevin", which I couldn't put down. This book ended up being a lot of effort to pick back up.

Editorial Reviews

“This is a sharp, smart, snarky satire of every conspiracy theory and hot button political issue ever spun; one that, at first glance, might induce an absurdist chuckle, until one realizes that it is based on an all-too-plausible reality.”
