Book one in the blockbuster Maze Runner series that spawned a movie franchise and ushered in a worldwide phenomenon! And don’t miss The Fever Code, the highly-anticipated series conclusion that finally reveals the story of how the maze was built!
When Thomas wakes up in the lift, the only thing he can remember is his name. He’s surrounded by strangers—boys whose memories are also gone.
Outside the towering stone walls that surround them is a limitless, ever-changing maze. It’s the only way out—and no one’s ever made it through alive.
Then a girl arrives. The first girl ever. And the message she delivers is terrifying: Remember. Survive. Run.

The Maze Runner and Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials, and Maze Runner: The Death Cure all are now major motion pictures featuring the star of MTV's Teen Wolf, Dylan O’Brien; Kaya Scodelario; Aml Ameen; Will Poulter; and Thomas Brodie-Sangster.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A Must read on any teenager's reading list "The Maze Runner" is hands down one of the best books I have ever read. James Dashner has masterfully intertwined action, adventure, mystery, and even a little bit of horror and created a book that has readers hooked to the end.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good read An interesting and captivating plot, it takes you on an extensive adventure while slowly introducing the world outside the maze too. A bit slow in the writing, but doesn't lose too much of its charm.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Okay I cannot say I was particularly fond of this book. I felt the characters were under-described, personality wise as well as in terms of their appearance. I felt the writing style to be a bit dull and found it hard to actually get into this book.
Date published: 2018-07-19
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Somewhere between good and “meh” Story was kinda interesting. Definitely for the younger reader. Very easy to understand writing style. Nothing complex. If you liked the movie, you will probably like the book.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favourite Book I've had this book for a long time now and I just love it! It gives me adrenaline from just reading it and that's a rare experience for me when I'm reading a book. The characters are just so lovable in their own way and I can really feel for them.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good book! There's a reason this book is popular; it's good! The story is an interesting one, and the characters are pretty well fleshed out and written. It's faced paced and action packed. A good book for anyone!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from So Good! I finally got around to reading this book and I am so thankful! The storyline is very well structured, it gives you just enough information without telling everything so you always want to read more.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The Maze Runner I wasn't a huge fan of the Hunger Games so I was skeptical, but this turned out to be a great series.
Date published: 2018-06-23
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Enjoyable! Awesome book! Personally I usually prefer first-person dystopian stories and I had some trouble getting into it, but overall I thoroughly enjoyed this. The relationships, although some brief, have dynamic and are so interesting. I am so excited to learn more about this world's history as well as Thomas' backstory in the upcoming novels. If you like THG or other post-apocalyptic worlds then you'll dive right into this.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it Nice easy read, looking forward to the next in the series.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Great start to interesting story but as a series-HUGE let down. The Maze Runner movie was what got me reading this novel and series. I really enjoyed the twist and turns of this book/story and it really keeps you guessing, never really knowing where the author is going to take it. But sadly this book was the one and only good book out of series. I would rather not give away the main plot line for those who have yet watched or read these, but basically the characters go through way to much and the author doesn't really seem to know how to really end it. By the third book I found myself confused and frustrated with where the author was leading me and by the end the climax is right at the top and then nothing! No proper finish and leaves you wanting to throw the book out your window. Was very let down and found it a waste of time. The Maze Runner sets you up for the unknown and literally takes you to the gutter.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Interesting concept The maze and the mystery surrounding it provided an interesting concept, but then that quickly fell apart when it's revealed these boys have been inside a giant science experiment all along.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Breathtaking! This book was absolutely breathing taking, it became more and more engaging page after page. I'd say that one problem with this book is that I couldn't put it down. I finished reading the Maze Runner within a week and I will definitely read the whole series.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I Loved This! I bought this book a month ago and when I started to read it I knew it was going to be a book I love. I have now read the whole series it is such an amazing book and James Dashner is such an amazing writer. When you are reading this book you really connect with the characters and get to know everyone just as if you were there.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A good story The world of the book is great. Storytelling was fast and didn't make me bored to the end wich is really good. The way of writing is simple and not hard to follow. The only thing i don't like that some moment's need a lot more explanation because u just have to imagine what is going on.
Date published: 2018-02-26
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Not Bad Normally I prefer to read the book before watching the movie but in this case I caught the first Maze Runner movie on TV which resulted in my interest to read the series. The book is quite different to the movie (no big surprise there) and I enjoyed these differences. In the book you get to learn more about the Gladers and the little society they've built themselves in the Glade among other more spoiler filled things. Overall the book was pretty good. Not amazing but enough to keep me interested and eager to read the remainder of the series!
Date published: 2018-02-14
Rated 3 out of 5 by from OK I love YA fiction, but this was only okay. It was compelling from moment to moment, and very fast-paced, but the overall story wasn't that great. I didn't bother reading the rest of the series.
Date published: 2018-02-13
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great novel I enjoyed the maze runner, really like the story line, and the intensity of it, but it was a little slow to start, but once you start you should definitely complete the whole series, because you really begin to learn about each character and about WICKED.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The BEST YA series I saw this movie trailer in theaters and I had no idea what this was about but I knew I had to watch it. While waiting for the movie to come out I read the novels and wow, James Dasher wrote the best YA series ever! The characters are so attachable and the plot was exciting. He really knows how to create his characters. Now that the 3rd movie is out I'm so sad that there's nothing to look forward too. It would be a long shot to hope for a 4th movie with The Kill Order.
Date published: 2018-01-28
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Decent Read I liked this book, wasn't the best book i've ever read but it was decent
Date published: 2018-01-24
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great YA dystopian I love the dystopian, post-apocalyptic genre and its often hard to find well written books in this category. But one of those hard to find gems would be The Maze Runner. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time, the suspense and action are the perfect balance to keep you reading from start to finish without wanting to put down the book. James Dashner has the amazing ability to put jump scares in his books (don't ask me how, go read for yourselves, you'll see). Definitely a must-read.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Aimed at Teens, but great for all Been listening to it on audiobook and it has been quite engaging. Great read not only for teens, but also for adults. If you like dystopian books, or books that are able to comment on the way humans interact -- without being political -- this is a great book. Easy read.

Date published: 2017-12-04
Rated 2 out of 5 by from meh this book didn't give me emotions until the end of the book. honestly, i thought the beginning and middle lacked substance and only when someone died was when things got interesting (as gory as that sounds, its the truth - the death breathes emotions into you because of how Thomas or the other characters felt. otherwise, on a normal day, Thomas' emotions were as relevant as a pile of shit - or as they say, klunk) i definitely preferred this book over 'the scorch trials'. i read 'the scorch trials' and stopped in the middle out of boredom. the movie does a better job getting emotions from the audience then the book does. when reading some parts of the maze runner or the scorch trials, i was just reading it. not allowing the words to soak up in my mind.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from If you ain't scared, you ain't human. James Dashner is quickly becoming one of my favourite authors, and it all started with this one book. At first, I only wanted to read this book because of Dylan O'Brien starring in The Maze Runner movie, however, I quickly developed a liking to this book. It's full of action and adventure, and a whole lot of mystery as to how they got in the maze. You really get to know and love the characters, which can be a good thing or bad thing, depends on how attached you get to a character. Overall, this book is a great start to an amazing series.
Date published: 2017-10-22
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Gripping plot and likeable characters I was completely enthralled by this book. The post-apocalyptic world James Dashner creates almost rivals that of Suzanne Collins. Wiping the memories of adolescent boys and putting them in the center of a giant maze to fend for themselves and find their way out is just as unthinkable as The Hunger Games. Thomas is a great protagonist: curious, brave, impulsive, and loyal. We learn everything about the interesting social order of the Maze at the same time as him. A gripping plot and likeable characters make for an exciting read!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Excitement for All Ages I watched the movie before reading the book (unfortunately) but the book delivered even when knowing what was coming up next. Interesting plot and unique! I also enjoyed the short chapters so I could finish the whole chapter before falling asleep at night.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Okay... I feel that this book was wayyyyyy over hyped. Im glad that I got to read this book when it came out but the way it was written wasn't really my style. The story is nice in a general understanding but I have passion for reading and get to experience a lot of different styles of writing along with the different and unique stories, personally this book wasn't for me

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great Read This book was a great read and it was hard to set the book down. The characters developed as the plot went on and the plot itself was a great idea, which made the book so captivating. This sort of storyline, a dystopian society shrouded with mystery, is very popular and it's great that this idea was is so unique when there are so many dystopian-based books available to select from.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Loved it I watched the movie first which was a good idea as like usual, the book is always better. The first novel in the series sets up the an adventure mystery in a dystopian apocalyptic future. Definitely recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Loved It This was a great read but I honestly found it very scary. I'm kind of a whimp when it comes to horror and I'm not kidding when I say I had nightmares because of this book. I also have a very vivid imagination so that probably didn't help. Even with the nightmares tho I loved this book!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great plot! This was a fantastic book! The suspense throughout the entire book kept me reading all day and into the nights. It has a very unique storyline. This book has manytwists and turns, and will leave you with more questions than answers when it is finished. I can hardly wait to read the next book! I would definately recommend this book to people who enjoyed Divergent by Victoria Ross, The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins, or Blood Red Road by Moira Young. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Interesting plot WAYYYYY better then the movie. I enjoyed the whole idea of the maze and characters personalities are great!
Date published: 2017-07-15
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Not the best writing, but interesting plot. I really wanted to love Maze Runner because the premise was interesting and I like that kind of book, but sadly, I found the writing somewhat lacking. There are a number of tendencies in the writing that annoyed me, I found the characters somewhat one-dimensional, and certain elements of the plot seemed either unnecessary or not quite fully formed. However, the truth is I couldn't stop halfway through, despite the weaker writing. The plot is interesting and fast-paced, and I wanted answers to questions through out. If you are curious, this book is maybe worth a read, but for me, not worth keeping a copy.
Date published: 2017-07-13
Rated 2 out of 5 by from The first time I have preferred the movie over the book An interesting concept bogged down by a poor writing style. You feel nothing when you witness the death of a main character at the end because he is simply one of a slew of generic characters that unsuccessfully attempt to put a beating heart into this novel. Additionally, I found myself more and more annoyed by Dashner's insistence on using made-up words to make his novel more PG. By all means, use dumb words like greeneies and gladers, but if you want to use language, don't just change the first two letters of a word to 'sh' in hopes that kids won't know what you are talking about. This may be the first book I have read where I felt the movie improved on the story by removing some of Dashner's shortcomings.
Date published: 2017-07-13
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Mystery Sci-Fi I love all of the mystery and suspense in this book. It's a page turner. Even my non-reader friends loved this book. Amazing!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from thumbs up this book (although not my favorite dystopian) was still very well written. i highly recommend for fans of the hunger games and divergent
Date published: 2017-07-05
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Writing is less than a-maze-ing Although the story line itself is compelling, the writing in this book leaves a lot to be desired, particularly in the first half. Perhaps, Dashner was attempting to use stilted language to reflect the sense of shock experienced by Thomas. I found the colloquial language tiresome after a while. However, that didn't stop me from reading the rest of the series in order to peel back the layers of this story - like traveling through a maze.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I loved this The movie was amazing and the book was amazing too!
Date published: 2017-06-29
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyable read I was attracted to this book by the movie trailer. For the beginning chapters, I almost thought I had made the wrong decision. At the beginning, the characters appeared to be unclear and confused. Don't lose heart! I was so glad that I read on. The story got more and more exciting and intriguing, with characters taking on different lives of their own. Scenes and images became vivid complementing the quickened plot. I couldn't stop myself and jumped into book two right after. A good find. I enjoyed this book; I have high hope for the whole series.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from It was ...okay. Maybe I was expecting too much from this book because of the over hype. But I had read this book looking for another dystopian like the Hunger Games and Divergent. It wasn't all that attention grabbing to me. There were parts that were boring and the rest was just okay.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Enjoyable read Overall a good book and I would read it again. It is fast paced and keeps you guessing. My only complaint is kind of the underlying reasoning as to how they time the whole story together.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Much better than I expected! I was very surprised by this book - James Dashner is a great writer and he really keeps you on the edge of your seat the whole way through the book! If you like the dystopian genre, I would say this is one of the better books you'll find out there.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Interesting Concept This was an interesting book to read, the concept is interesting and all of the characters are able to have some development even with a lack of memories. My one criticism though is that the ending just alludes to this series being like every other YA series coming out right now, they have to defeat the evil dystopian government because these teenagers are the only ones who can do so.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Maze Runner I only read this book after seeing the movie and I really love the story line that you didn't get to see in the movies and learning more about my favorite characters. This book has a really interesting plot. #plumreview

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The book is better than the movie James Dashner writes some amazing characters in this book, I think they were my favourite part of reading the Maze Runner. If you plan on watching the movie definitely read the book first! It is way better.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from It was Okay The Maze Runner is a novel with a fantastic plot, but I found myself getting alittle bored and confused in some places. However in other places I couldn't put the book down. The volcabulary used adds detail but too much of it gets boring.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Book was hard to put down. I didn't get these books until I saw an add for the first movie in the series. Book was slow at first, but picked up speed as it carried on. The next three books were an easy purchase, and I was happy that I didn't have to wait for the next book in the series.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Meh This book was recommended to me by many friends, and when I read it, it was a bit of a let down. But lots of colorful language spiced it up a bit. Just a bit. Also, like the previous reviews, this book is a bit overrated.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Amazing Story line! The story line was what got me hooked and how big it was. James Dashner sure didn't make it easy for those boys and Theresa to try to find their way out! It had amazing character development and was relatable too to the main character, Thomas. The book made me fall in love with some characters, and despise others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from A good writer doesn't give it all away The story starts off with the main character being introduced into his world just we the reader always are. In other stories our character has a good understanding of what their world is- but now the character experiences just as we do what it's like to enter an unfamiliar world. Though its definetly not as dramatic- or terrifying. Dashner is good at keeping secrets and jumping us with crazy scares, the story twists and turns - and I found it unpredictable - but I was hooked. Not just this book but the entire series. #plumreview

Rated 3 out of 5 by from A bit horrific I read the series and while I liked it at the time, in retrospect, I find this book and the series it's part of to be kind of macabre. The plot isn't that bad. I would not recommend it to people under 15.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great story, Mediocre writing I wanted to love this book, and I did love the story. It was interesting and exciting, but the writing style of the author was quite off-putting for me. One minute, Thomas is SUPER angry and then literally in the next sentence, he calms down and is totally normal again... I need more developed characters and writing style than that :( Despite that, the story is still good, so I would still recommend trying it out

Rated 5 out of 5 by from My Favourite!! I tend to lean toward books that are fast paced and this gave me just that. From the very beginning you are brought to a world you know nothing about, what's more intriguing than that? I got completely sucked into the book wanting to find out what would happen next. It has great concepts and plot development, and James Dashner's writing was easy to read and yet gave me so much insight on the setting and allowed me to develop them in my head clearly. There was a never a dull moment as I was reading these books. Lastly, the characters are very likeable, I got attached to them easily.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This was an amazing adventure! I purchased this book a while ago and once I picked it up I loved it. I will say I found the beginning a little slow because you couldn't really understand what was happening however the first page the very fist sentence is gripping and I need that in a first sentence to spark my interest. You got to see through this book WICKED unfold and you only understood what was happening once the characters figured it out which gave it a very enjoyable sense of mystery.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from The Maze Runner I started a book club with my son (11) in an effort to get him to expand on his ideas and hopefully translate that to doing better on school projects. The first book he choose was The Maze Runner. We both loved it. He actually was way more into this book than I expected. The story is fast paced and interesting with a great cliffhanger to get you into the next book.

Read from the Book

Chapter 1He began his new life standing up, surrounded by cold darkness and stale, dusty air.Metal ground against metal; a lurching shudder shook the floor beneath him. He fell down at the sudden movement and shuffled backward on his hands and feet, drops of sweat beading on his forehead despite the cool air. His back struck a hard metal wall; he slid along it until he hit the corner of the room. Sinking to the floor, he pulled his legs up tight against his body, hoping his eyes would soon adjust to the darkness. With another jolt, the room jerked upward like an old lift in a mine shaft.Harsh sounds of chains and pulleys, like the workings of an ancient steel factory, echoed through the room, bouncing off the walls with a hollow, tinny whine. The lightless elevator swayed back and forth as it ascended, turning the boy's stomach sour with nausea; a smell like burnt oil invaded his senses, making him feel worse. He wanted to cry, but no tears came; he could only sit there, alone, waiting. My name is Thomas, he thought.That... that was the only thing he could remember about his life.He didn't understand how this could be possible. His mind functioned without flaw, trying to calculate his surroundings and predicament. Knowledge flooded his thoughts, facts and images, memories and details of the world and how it works. He pictured snow on trees, running down a leaf-strewn road, eating a hamburger, the moon casting a pale glow on a grassy meadow, swimming in a lake, a busy city square with hundreds of people bustling about their business. And yet he didn't know where he came from, or how he'd gotten inside the dark lift, or who his parents were. He didn't even know his last name. Images of people flashed across his mind, but there was no recognition, their faces replaced with haunted smears of color. He couldn't think of one person he knew, or recall a single conversation. The room continued its ascent, swaying; Thomas grew immune to the ceaseless rattling of the chains that pulled him upward. A long time passed. Minutes stretched into hours, although it was impossible to know for sure because every second seemed an eternity. No. He was smarter than that. Trusting his instincts, he knew he'd been moving for roughly half an hour.Strangely enough, he felt his fear whisked away like a swarm of gnats caught in the wind, replaced by an intense curiosity. He wanted to know where he was and what was happening. With a groan and then a clonk, the rising room halted; the sudden change jolted Thomas from his huddled position and threw him across the hard floor. As he scrambled to his feet, he felt the room sway less and less until it finally stilled. Everything fell silent.A minute passed. Two. He looked in every direction but saw only darkness; he felt along the walls again, searching for a way out. But there was nothing, only the cool metal. He groaned in frustration; his echo amplified through the air, like the haunted moan of death. It faded, and silence returned. He screamed, called for help, pounded on the walls with his fists.Nothing.Thomas backed into the corner once again, folded his arms and shivered, and the fear returned. He felt a worrying shudder in his chest, as if his heart wanted to escape, to flee his body."Someone... help... me!" he screamed; each word ripped his throat raw.A loud clank rang out above him and he sucked in a startled breath as he looked up. A straight line of light appeared across the ceiling of the room, and Thomas watched as it expanded. A heavy grating sound revealed double sliding doors being forced open. After so long in darkness, the light stabbed his eyes; he looked away, covering his face with both hands. He heard noises above--voices--and fear squeezed his chest."Look at that shank.""How old is he?""Looks like a klunk in a T-shirt.""You're the klunk, shuck-face.""Dude, it smells like feet down there!""Hope you enjoyed the one-way trip, Greenie.""Ain't no ticket back, bro."Thomas was hit with a wave of confusion, blistered with panic. The voices were odd, tinged with echo; some of the words were completely foreign--others felt familiar. He willed his eyes to adjust as he squinted toward the light and those speaking. At first he could see only shifting shadows, but they soon turned into the shapes of bodies--people bending over the hole in the ceiling, looking down at him, pointing. And then, as if the lens of a camera had sharpened its focus, the faces cleared. They were boys, all of them--some young, some older. Thomas didn't know what he'd expected, but seeing those faces puzzled him. They were just teenagers. Kids. Some of his fear melted away, but not enough to calm his racing heart.Someone lowered a rope from above, the end of it tied into a big loop. Thomas hesitated, then stepped into it with his right foot and clutched the rope as he was yanked toward the sky. Hands reached down, lots of hands, grabbing him by his clothes, pulling him up. The world seemed to spin, a swirling mist of faces and color and light. A storm of emotions wrenched his gut, twisted and pulled; he wanted to scream, cry, throw up. The chorus of voices had grown silent, but someone spoke as they yanked him over the sharp edge of the dark box. And Thomas knew he'd never forget the words."Nice to meet ya, shank," the boy said. "Welcome to the Glade."
