Howard Pyle (Mar 5, 1853 – Nov 9, 1911) was an American illustrator and author. In 1894 he began teaching illustration at the Drexel Institute. After 1900, he founded his own school of art. His 1883 classic publication The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood remains in print. He published his first novel, Otto of the Silver Hand, in 1888. He also illustrated historical and adventure stories for periodicals.
The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood  follows the English outlaw Robin Hood and his band of Merry Men, known for  stealing from the rich and giving to the poor, and in so doing became an everlasting symbol of virtue. Dangers are lurking, arrows are flying, kings are intriguing – what else is needed to make one turn the pages to the very end?
