Rated 5 out of 5 by from Brilliant tale is a wonderful volume. My review is not about the story other than to say it is a classic, worth reading and rereading and well, yes. This review is about the hardcover pocket edition. Love it. Love it. Love it. I am surprised to have read so many negative reviews on the Internet about this set. Complaints about the print size - well, it does say clearly pocket edition and my middle aged, ti-focal wearing eyes experience no problem with the density of the print, the very good line spacing, or the font size. Complaints about the printing/binding being done in China - politics aside (not a small issue) the printing is consistent, the pages cut square, the covers well fit, the binding is glued not sewn but my experience with Harper Collins bindings of this kind is positive; they hold up well if treated well. Complaints about the cover - I can only say if one does not want the original covers as intended and drawn by Tolkien himself, why buy it? I love the covers, original maps and occasional original Tolkien drawings in these volumes. What a treat. Complaints about the size of the books - really? They are clearly described as *pocket* so what is there to not know before purchasing (unless one is inattentive to descriptions - hardly the fault of a retailer :) ) / Love the size. Fits wonderfully in the hand, in my sketch satchel, perfect for sitting at the park bench or curled up in bed. Complaints about the box - its cut on a 45 degree angle and not closed in fully. Um, ok. Complaints about the lack of illustrations - I'm an illustrator. If one wants a book full of illustrations there are plenty on the market, including classic LoTR art by the earliest illustrators of the tale. We have no end to images of the Hobbit and LoTR. I prefer to do the imaging in my own head as I did on my first read of these books, long before the glut of movies, calendars, fan art, etc etc. Complaints the books are thick - I'd call them pleasantly chubby. While the spine thickness varies the form factor otherwise is a lovely 4 5/8 X 6 1/8 inches or 11.74 X 15.55 cm I will treasure this middle-earth treasury for some time. P.S. And the price ! According to the box these are intended to retail at 89.99 CAD. Another amazon of an online retailer has them at 60ish so whether you buy the set online or in store with Chapters/Indigo you cannot but win.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantasy/Adventure I first read these when I was 12 years old; I remember struggling with The Hobbit but loving the Lord of the Rings trilogy. As an adult I have gone back and reread the entire series and while I still prefer the Lord of the Rings Trilogy I can now say I have also enjoyed reading the Hobbit. These are fantastically complex novels that immerse the reader into the adventure. Highly recommend to anyone who loves fantasy and adventure novels!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Give it a try I'm not going to lie, I read this book after watching the movies. It's not that I didn't want to sit down and read the book, but to be honest it was a bit of a long read for me. That being said, as always, the book was much better. There are so many details inside these pages that never made it to the big screen, and I encourage anyone who enjoyed the movies to give it a try, you might surprise yourself.
